PAUL KALLAND Obituary

KALLAND Paul Leonard Kalland Paul Leonard Kalland, 65, died in a car accident May 31, 2021, which was both Memorial Day and the day before his 41st wedding anniversary. He was on the way home from taking a drive on a beautiful afternoon in his beloved 1981 280Z Datsun, most likely to be followed by a beverage and cigar on the back deck listening to vintage music. He died at the scene. Paul retired from American Airlines with 35 years of service the previous June as a 777 Captain based at JFK with international routes to Europe and South America; his favorite destination was Barcelona. He previously flew the 767/757, MD-80, 737 and 727, based in DCA, San Diego and Chicago. He was also a CDR US Navy Reserve (Ret.). He graduated from Aviation Officer Candidate School in Pensacola and then completed flight training and received his wings in Corpus Christi, where he met Kathy. He later flew the E-2C, UC-12B, C-9B and other aircraft with various squadrons and assignments in San Diego, Coronado and Corpus Christi. As a reservist, he was activated for Desert Storm with VR-57 to Germany. Paul was born June 30, 1955, in Minneapolis. He graduated from St. John's University in Collegeville, MN, with a major in Business and a minor in German. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn (Kathy) Vine Kalland; his daughter, Sarah Kalland McLoughlin, and her husband, Anthony, daughter, Nora, and son, Conor; and his son, Robert Vine Kalland, and his partner, Mary Caitlyn Hooker. He is also survived by his younger brother Kurt Peter Kalland and his family, and many other extended family members. He was predeceased by his father, Robert Michael Kalland; mother, Frances Thill Kalland; and older brother, Robert Michael Kalland, Jr. The family greatly appreciates the outpouring of love, support and so much more from everyone who knew Paul from his Minnesota upbringing and education, naval and American Airlines careers, church communities, life in Fairfax Station and San Diego, travel around the world, and varied interests and activities. Paul and Kathy often reminisced about and were so thankful for all the wonderful people in their lives. There will be a memorial service at 1 p.m., Wednesday, June 30 - Paul's 66th birthday - at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 5114 Twinbrook Rd., Fairfax, VA. A reception on site will follow. Interment at Quantico National Cemetery will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate fond remembrances of Paul, as well as honoring his memory with love for our God and country and your family and friends. And, in the course of your day put a smile on someone's face. If you would like to make a donation in his memory, please do so to the charity of your choice.

I fondly remember Paul when he and Kathy lived in our neighborhood. It was a joy to be with him and discuss his flying experiences. We miss this wonderful man and are always saddened when we recall the unnecessary and tragic way his life ended. May God always bless you and your family.
