Paul Clifford Shivery, Jr., 80, of Fairfax, VA passed away on Tuesday, July 29, 2025 at Fair Oaks Hospital surrounded by family. Paul was born in West Grove, PA to the late Paul C. Sr. and Martha Graver Shivery.
Raised on a dairy farm in Homeville, PA, Paul was a 1963 graduate of Oxford High School, Oxford, PA. He continued his education and earned a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Delaware in 1967.
After college, Paul began civilian work at the Army Corps of Engineers as a Civil Engineer from 1967 until he was drafted. He trained at the U.S. Army Bootcamp in Fort Leonard Wood, MO from August 1969 until November 1969. He was then assigned to the U.S. Army Engineer Officer Candidate Regiment, Ft. Belvoir, VA from December 1969 until he graduated from the Engineer Officer Candidate Regiment in 1970 as a 2nd LT. He then went back to the Army Corps of Engineers, Arlington Hall and served as a military Civil Engineer until he was discharged in 1972. Paul then went on to work for the Fairfax County Government, in the Office of Planning, as a Civil Engineer from 1972 – 1985. Next was a stint in the private sector, as he went to work at Hazel-Peterson Companies as a Civil Engineer, 1985 – 1991, overseeing the development of Fair Lakes in Fairfax. Paul then returned to local government with Stafford County, in the Office of Planning and Development, where he worked as a Civil Engineer from 1991 until 2004 when he retired.
Paul loved the Washington Football Team and the Washington Nationals, and was a true Jimmy Buffett Parrot Head. He was an avid collector and purveyor of history and antiquities. Paul was a member of two groups that were near and dear to his heart. First was the Cochranville Hunting Club, which hunted together in Potter County, PA, and the second was the Young Engineers Club (YEC), a group of friends who worked together at Fairfax County and went on to be lifelong friends. Paul loved spending time with his wife Pam at their home in Fairfax, and packing up the SUV and heading to their house in Nags Head, NC together to spend time with their beach "family." Paul looked forward to being around family and friends in PA and VA. Above all, Paul was most proud of his son and always loved and cherished their times together and long phone conversations.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Pam Timm Shivery, son, Paul C. Shivery III, sister Barbara Shivery Pyle of Lancaster, sister Joyce Shivery Gunzenhauser of Lancaster, sister Mary Jane Shivery Kleinhans wife of Jere Kleinhans of New Providence, PA, Martha Shivery Hendrix of York, PA, and sister-in-law Cheryl Skelton Timm of Spotsylvania, VA.
