Paul and I met in the 1980's. I work at the Jet Propulsiuon Laboratory in Pasadena California. At the time we had a very large task supported by the Army and the Air Force. We needed lots of employees who already had security clearances and we needed them fast. Paul worked for a company that supplied candidates for us to interview. The people Paul sent us were consistently better than those sent by others, and I ended up hiring several of them. We went from business aquaintances to friends.
Shortly thereafter he retired, but we stayed in contact. For the past several years we met for lunch weekly, even though that meant a long drive for him from Orange to Pasadena.
Paul was a very keen observer and stayed up-to-date in a variety of fields, including politics, foreign affairs, sports (especially the NBA), the stock market, and the entertainment industry. His favorite current star was Jessica Biehl. He was a lifelong fan of Benny Goodman, Joe DiMaggio, and Frank Sinatra and spoke fondly of them very often.
Paul was extremely fond of his two granschildren and proudly showed off their pictures to whomever he met.
His death came as a shock to me. I will miss him and so will several of the staff members of the restaurant we usually went to on Thursdays. One waitress in particular, named Keisha, was extremely upset when she heard of his death. She cried uncontrollably for several minutes.
