PEGGY HERNDON Obituary


Peggy Costello McCamant   Herndon  "Margaret Ann"  
September 9, 1926 - September 30, 2018  Two weeks after celebrating her 92nd birthday in the company of her children, Peggy Herndon passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord. A Catholic Memorial Mass was said in her honor on October 5, 2018 at Riderwood Chapel in Silver Spring. Born in Hutchinson, Kansas, to Mary O'Halloran and Raymond Costello. Peggy studied at Kansas State University, where she was a Member of Kappa Delta Sorority. In 1949 Peggy married Samuel R. McCamant, an architect. In 1957 the McCamants moved to Liberal, Kansas, and in 1965 the family moved to East Lansing, Michigan. In 1970 they moved to Silver Spring, MD, where Sam was appointed Chief Architect for NOAA. Peggy managed physicians' offices in both locations. In 1977 Peggy married Cdr. Edward B. Herndon III, USNA class of 1942; he passed in 2014. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery, where Peggy's remains shall join his. Peggy was Chair of the Red Cross Volunteers at NIH (National Institute of Health), and later volunteered at the Naval Hospital. She and Ed were Eucharistic Ministers at Holy Cross Hospital for 15 years. In 2000, Ed and Peggy moved into Riderwood Retirement Community. Peggy started a weekly water aerobics class, an investment group, and two duplicate bridge groups. She also loved painting and showed her works. Ed and Peggy were Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers at Riderwood Resurrection Catholic Community and Peggy served on the Catholic Council. Peggy is survived by her son Michael A. McCamant, of Hernando, Florida; Starr A. McCamant, of Panama; Kathryn McCamant Hall of Newport News, VA; Constance S. McCamant of Sun Valley, ID, and her stepchildren, Julia Herndon of Williamsburg, VA; Carol Herndon of Bethesda, MD; and David Herndon of Santa Fe, NM, as well as nine grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers please send any contributions to the Wounded Warriors Project.
