PETER VAN DER VATE Obituary

Peter Adrian van der Vate
On Sunday, February 26, 2017, Peter Adrian van der Vate passed away peacefully at his home in Fairfax, Virginia. Pete, son of Jan and Harriett van der Vate; loving husband of Frances Warlick van der Vate, transitioned from this life after a long battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Fran and their daughter, Sarah van der Vate; and his first wife, Margaret Dodd Ritter and their children, Jan van der Vate, Susan van der Vate Friese, and Elizabeth van der Vate. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara van der Vate, and four grandchildren. Pete enjoyed a fulfilling car racing career, winning two SCCA National Championships. He went on to open and operate his own car repair shop for over 25 years, until he retired. He loved learning how things worked, he was a voracious reader, and he was a great friend to everyone that knew him. He loved long drives on winding country roads while listening to anything from Zydeco to Bluegrass, and spending time at Virginia International Raceway. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 9 and funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 10, both at Money & King Funeral Home in Vienna, VA. Interment at Fairfax City Cemetery will follow the funeral service, and there will be a reception following interment at 1 p.m. at American Legion Post 177 in Fairfax, VA for family and friends. Flowers can be sent to Money & King (but please, no lilies - he really hated lilies.) Online condolences and fond memories of Peter may be offered to the family at: www.moneyandking.com

I hope that Petes wife and family have found comfort and healing this past year of missing him in their lives.
The racing season starts for us in April at VIR. We will miss seeing Pete driving around the paddock, stopping to say hi and talking about the cars. Although we knew him a short time we always looked forward to seeing and spending time with him.

We met Pete in 2010 at the Alfa Event at Watkins Glen where he was honored for his many accomplishments during his racing career. He was a regular at VIR and was always interested in our cars and how they were going over the weekend. He was kind, funny and knew almost everything about Alfas and racing. He will be missed by many. Our sincere condolences to all his family.

We all enjoyed PETE coming to the Warlick Cousins Renion each November. Our love and warm hugs to all his family from all the Warlick Cousins. Rachel Warlick Dunn

From one of your old SCCA friends, may the roads be smooth and fast.

Before the Car Guys made the joke about "where there is smoke, there is a Saab", Pete knew those cars inside and out. He ran a Mac based system before the rest of us knew what Macs could do. Pete was honest, trust worthy and his love of cars showed in the excellent work that his team did. Thanks Pete, you will be missed!
