Of McLean, VA was remembered July 22 in heartfelt services at Temple Rodef Shalom, as the inspirational mother of Kira Thompson of West Hollywood, CA and Derek Thompson of New York City, as the devoted daughter of Ellen Kahn of Franklin, MI, and adoring sister of Rob Kahn of New York City and as the nurturing and patient wife of Bob Thompson. Battling cancer valiantly for 16 months, Petra spent her precious last days at home, passing gently and serenely on July 18, 2013 encircled by beloved family and friends. Having attended Kingswood School Cranbrook in Michigan, receiving a B.S. from A.U. in DC and earning her Masters from the University of Chicago, Petra's early career took her to Avon Corporation and CBS in New York and then, after her marriage to Bob in 1981, Petra enjoyed telcom marketing positions at MCI and Sprint. Always committed to non-profit endeavors, Petra became devoted to The Potomac School, Theatre Washington (Helen Hayes Awards), The Virginia Chamber Orchestra and, most recently and personally, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. Passionate about skiing, theatre, cinema, art, gardening and as the hostess of countless wine dinners, Petra's exuberant spirit, girlish spunk, hereditary dimples and infectious laugh reflected an essentially magnetic charm, which pulled hundreds of friends into ever-expanding circles of admirers. It is this universe of diverse friends and a doting family who will always honor the shining presence that is Petra Lynn Kahn - forever "27" and eternally in our hearts.
