PRISCILLA CHENOWETH Obituary

PRISCILLA READ CHENOWETH  (Age 90)
Died on February 16, 2021, at home in Silver Spring, after battling a series of strokes.  Born Priscilla Read to Burton and Gerda (nee Rosenquist) Read, she grew up in Brooklyn and attended Oberlin College and the University of Chicago, where she met Don Chenoweth, who founded Bembo Typographers in 1957. When they moved to New Jersey they helped begin the Middlesex Co. chapter of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) with the help of national leaders Norman and Velma Hill. She was co-organizer of the 1963 March on Trenton, led by Bayard Rustin and James Farmer.  After graduating from Rutgers Law School in 1968 she worked for Legal Services and as Dpty AG under Arthur J. Sills. From 1974 to 2005, she was Managing Editor and later Chief Case Digest Editor at the New Jersey Law Journal. From 1991 to 1998 she led the successful effort to exonerate an innocent young man, Luis Kevin Rojas. In 2003 she moved to Leisure World where she made many dear friends and became an ardent supporter of Rep. Jamie Raskin. She was predeceased by her husband, Don, and her sisters, Doris Hays and Connie Schwadron. She will be missed by her children, Karin, Lesley Risinger, and Eric, and many other relatives and friends. Email [email protected] for info on zoom memorial. Suggested contributions: IRC or the Tommy Raskin Memorial Fund.

I am not sure that I have the right person, but I did go to Erasmus Hall High School (in Brooklyn) with Priscilla Read, who--when I knew her--was going out with a man named Chenowith. (Priscilla and I were friends, never romantically involved.) I remember her fondly, but unfortunately lost contact with her. Indeed, I went to a school reunion decades after we had been students together, especially to renew contact, but alas she had not attended. I would indeed welcome learning more about her subsequent life, and may be contacted at: [email protected].
