RANDOLPH PAYNE Obituary

RANDOLPH ALLEN PAYNE
Artist Randolph Allen Payne died peacefully but unexpectedly on August 11, 2014 two days before his 75th birthday. Mr. Payne was born in Augusta County, VA, was graduated from the University of Virginia, and served in the U.S. Navy. Throughout his life, he was a devoted, accomplished and prolific artist. He died on Chincoteague Island, VA, where for 25 years he and his wife ran a gallery; the family lives part of the year in Salisbury, MD. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Nancy Sloan Payne, his daughter Anna Straub, her husband Gary and his dearly loved granddaughter, Erin Elizabeth.Mr. Payne was known especially for his scenes of the Virginia countryside, for his transformed furniture, and for his artistic innovations and passions. The scenes he depicted go beyond the usual, the pretty. He worked mostly in acrylics, showing intense interest in composition and color use. Mr. Payne's work was shown at his gallery, CLOUDS, on Chincoteague Island, at his mid-1960s NEW MASTERS gallery in Old Town Alexandria, and in many Washington, DC galleries. His works were in Virginia Artist Exhibitions and traveling exhibitions organized by the Virginia Museum in Richmond. His paintings are in national and international collections including those of Phillip Morris, Xerox, First and Merchants Corporation, the University of Virginia, and United Utilities. His donated works benefitted community-based organizations such as the Museum of Chincoteague Island, the YMCA, and The Library. His paintings are also in many private homes and collections. From the early 1970s until his retirement in 1996 he taught in the upper School Visual Arts Department at St. Stephen's School and then at St. Stephen's and St. Agnes School in Alexandria, Virginia. He was an active and innovative teacher, making use of technology and music in his classroom-studio, and his many students benefitted from this astute visual ability and intense interest in contemporary art.Mr. Payne was predeceased by his mother, Margaret Koontz Payne Hardman, and his father, C. Edgar Payne. Donations may be made to the Museum of Chincoteague Island, P.O. Box 352, Chincoteague, VA 23336 for the RANDOLPH PAYNE VISUAL ARTS AWARD, which will be presented annually to a graduating Chincoteague High School student or to the Museum's summer internship program. He also once stated he wished that after his death people would plant a tree of their choice in his memory.A celebration of his life will be announced and take place later this year.

A tree will be planted in Ontario, Canada.
Randy Payne was one of our dearest friends and his art informed our life, our decor and our visual space. There are 20 "Randys" illuminating our home - lovingly and laughingly described as "Clouds North"
Love and laughter defined our relationship with Randy and Nancy. First, the hugs all-round and then the plans for Martinis (often on our balcony at the Waterside) and an evening of fun, good food, and worthy conversation, conversation that ranged through every topic imagineable.
The big man, the southern gentleman, the caring soul, will be deeply missed.
All our love to Nancy, Anna, Gary and Erin.
See you soon, hugs all-round,
Cam and Diana McRae

I was so shocked and saddened to hear of Randy's death. I had stopped into the shop just a few days before and had a lovely chat with him and discussed his newest art work. Visits with Randy and Nancy and seeing their new work is always a highlight of my trips to Chincoteague. I will treasure my three paintings which provide such a loving portrayal of the Island but I will very much miss our chats and seeing the directions in which his talent takes him.

Hi Mrs. Payne and Anna.
Not sure if you remember me but I remember all of you fondly and I am so sorry to hear of your dad and husbands passing.
I hope the two of you are well and my thoughts are with you.
Best,

We were so saddened to hear of Randy's death. We always loved coming into Clouds to see his latest painting that perfectly depicted Chincoteague Island. We are so fortunate to have two of his beautiful paintings. They will always remind us of a special man and his extraordinary talent. May God bless Nancy and her family at this sad time.. He will be greatly missed.

It was such a shock to learn of Randy's death. He and Nancy personified Chincoteague to us over the many years we visited and owned houses there. Our Randy Payne painting of a bright red car and a huge black tugboat, both parked behind a robins-egg blue house on on North Main Street, is a classic treasure, as are our little bench, its top adorned with a view of the marsh that could well have been painted from the front stoop of our East Side Drive house, our cupboard with its elegant faux “inlay” around its top and a gorgeous scene of the Assateague shore on its door, and our two whimsical Randy/Nancy pyramids -- all constant and comforting reminders of a lovely place, a wonderful artist, and a lovely, warm, great-hearted person who enriched so many lives with his graciousness, hospitality and off-beat humor, all to be greatly missed. Our deepest condolences to Nancy, Anna, Gary and Erin.

We are so very sad and stunned to lose Randy. His wonderful work -- and Nancy's -- is all around us in DC and in Chincoteague, but Chincoteague will not be at all the same without him. He was a wonderful and important presence and friend there for so many years, and he and Nancy are among the most important reasons we love Chincoteague. Our thoughts and love are with Nancy and his family. Linda Lance and Kirk Victor

Our visit to Clouds has always been an event to look forward to for the last 14 years and we have always enjoyed our extended conversations with the Paynes. Our extended family has also enjoyed the gallery over the years and among us we own many works from Randy and Nancy. We will certainly miss you, Randy. Best to Nancy and the family. Our entire family is saddened by the loss of a friend and treasured artist. We have several of Randy's paintings, which we will cherish even more now. Stopping by Clouds to see Randy and Nancy was always a highlight of our trips to Chincoteague. We can see his wonderful smile and hear his laughter as we talked about island happenings and his latest paintings. Randy managed to capture the unique beauty of ordinary places and things. His clouds over wetlands or grassy plains transport us to those special places. We will miss him and wish we could be there to give a hug to his family.

Porches: haven and prospect. Like Chincoteague.
