RAYMOND McGAVIN Obituary

Raymond Leonard McGavin
Born January 27, 1999, passed away June 18, 2018 near his home in Alexandria, VA. A loyal son and devoted brother, Raymond is survived by his parents, Annemarie (Gilmore) and Travis McGavin; his younger brothers, Sean and Elias; his maternal grandparents, Joan and Leonard Gilmore; his paternal grandparents, Carol and Glenn Giles; his aunts and uncle, Joanie Gilmore, and Heather and Jon Hallett; his great-grandmothers, Joan Ryan and Joanne Dillon Lichty; and his many cousins, great-aunts and uncles, and other family members and friends.Academically gifted, Raymond attended Gonzaga College High School, graduating in 2017. While at Gonzaga, Raymond participated in Chamber Choir and was a member of the wrestling team. A talented musician and singer, he played bass for the West Potomac Choir Concert. He was the lead guitarist and vocalist for his own band, Civic Duty, which is on the verge of releasing its first album. He was also an excellent writer and published four poems in the Gonzaga literary magazine, "The Phoenix."But Raymond's most singular quality was his great compassion for all. He set such an exemplary example as a member of his high school's wrestling team that the team named a sportsmanship award after him --- The McGavin Men for Others Award. He performed in multiple fundraisers, including Music for McKenna. As an employee of Chili's, he used his fluency in Spanish to help Spanish-speaking customers. More than one customer would return to tell his supervisor how much they appreciated Raymond's patience and kindness. About to matriculate at the College of William and Mary in the fall, Raymond was on the cusp of a brilliant future. And the beauty of his humble, poetic soul lives on.Raymond's memorial service will be held at St. Aloysius Church, 19 Eye St. NW, Washington, DC 20001 on Wednesday, July 11 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the ConnerStrong Foundation at http://www.connerstrongfoundation.org/ or the Gonzaga Scholarship Fund, 19 Eye St. NW, Washington, DC 20001. My sincere sympathy to the entire family and friends. I read about Raymond on the U2 site. What a special person. The theme of a U2 show is Love. He was surrounded by enormous love there.

Sweet, Raymond,

Our family misses you and loves you. I miss your sweet, bashful smile amidst that great head of hair :), and the way you would look up from it and your guitar to greet us when we walked in the room.

I will miss you, Jack and TJ lumbering up and down our narrow stairs, each of you tall young men, yet still scampering about like little boys running out to play. Such good, loyal friends.

You were so good to Jack and supported him like only a true friend does. You both had the best of taste in friends as you did music. A bond that will remain through time.

Thank you for sharing your talents and kindness with our family and friends.

God bless you, Raymond. Rest In Peace.
