RICHARD CURTIS Obituary

CURTIS Richard Allen Curtis (Age 75) Passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 27, 2022 at his home in Fairfax Station, VA, following a long battle with cancer. He was one of the most influential journalists in the country, but was better known to his family as a loving father, caring husband, devoted son, loyal brother, and friend to many. He found and created a sense of community everywhere he went, and his combination of quiet humility and profound generosity resulted in decades-long friendships. Richard was born on July 25, 1946, in the hamlet of Crossnore, NC, and grew up in Hudson, NC. He served with the 82nd Airborne Division before graduating from North Carolina State University in 1972 with a Bachelor of Product Design from the College of Design. As a student, he served as Editor-in-Chief of the school's newspaper, The Technician, where he was known as the fastest typesetter in the paper's history. He met and quickly fell in love with a Meredith College student, Jane Cromley of Saluda, SC. After only three months of courtship, certain that Jane was his soulmate, he proposed marriage on New Year's Eve 1969. They enjoyed 51 years of marriage filled with laughter, adventure, and love. He held various editorial positions at newspapers in North Carolina, Florida, and Maryland before joining the founding editorial team of the newspaper that would become USA TODAY. Richard found great satisfaction in making improvements in and around his beloved home and tinkering with road cars and race cars. He made lifelong friends from his membership in the Woodbridge (Va.) Kart Club and the local chapter of the Porsche Club of America. Richard and Jane were active travelers in retirement, exploring European cities and countryside as well as visiting 22 State Capitol buildings across the USA. He regularly walked around Burke Lake, always read a print newspaper, and drank the strongest coffee he could make. His love of "doing" was only matched by his passion for "doing nothing". Richard could spend entire days lounging at the beach or on a dock while soaking up the sun, listening to classic rock, and drinking Cheerwine. He is lovingly remembered by his wife Jane; daughter Charlotte and her spouse Mariana Valencia of Brooklyn, NY; son Tyler and his spouse Alyson and two beloved grandchildren, Owen and Daniel, of Durham, NC; brother Eugene and spouse Angela of Myrtle Beach, SC; sister Patricia and spouse Wade Apple of Burlington, NC. He was preceded by his parents, Julius C, and Florence Pritchard Curtis. There will be a celebration of Richard's life on April 2 at 2 p.m. at Abiding Presence Lutheran Church in Burke, VA. The service will be livestreamed from the church's website. Richard's wish was, in lieu of flowers, donations in his memory be made to the Richard Allen Curtis Fund for Design Students at the NCSU College of Design at go.ncsu.edu/curtisdesignfund.

I started Karting in 91 with WKC & met Richard at what was then Eastern Karting . I was not sure what class to run or what i needed i didn't have but he out of the blue began to help me get what i needed to run in the Sportsman class which i did for a few years then went on to the pipe classes. I ran for 15 years with both WKC & WKA & got to know Richard very well , he was always funny & helpful & along with his good friend Eddie Davis they helped make the sport more fun . I recall seeing both of them which was the last time i saw either was at one of Summit Points Vintage car events & as i walked by not seeing them i hear this HEY PAUL coming from off the side & lo & behold it was them . They could have said nothing but that was not how either of them were & what a blast to shoot the bull with these two !!! . Great guys & ones i will remember with the few others we lost along the way over the time i raced. I still go to watch & see the few guys left from my time & what a great sport this is & it's folks just like Eddie & Richard that helped make it so . They are missed as well as the other friends i lost associated with Karting. I was ne ver quite sue if Richard raced but i had plenty of races with Eddie or at least i saw him either pass me or just the back of that very fast helmet. Good people & when your in WKC you are family not just faces in the crowd. For Richards family i wish you all the best & sadness for the loss of all the friends lost during those fun years at Summit Point & VIR , Charlotte & all the great tracks we got to run at. RIP to Del Homer , John Dent, Dave Reds Phelps , Mark Taylor , a few others & my close & dear friend Tim Melnick. This was sent to me via email so i had already written something so this is just another thank you to Rich for so much help & laughter .

I raced with WKC & WKA from 91 to 2006 in the Laydown classes & knew Richard quite well & Eddy as well. He was always kind & helpful as well as funny . I last saw him & Eddy at one of the Jefferson 500 Vintage car races but that was some years back. As i was walking by i hear this big hey Paul !!! There was Richard& Eddy & his Vette which sadly he ended up wrecking at the track latter in that year but he was OK & i hear he 's got a new car. Always a joy to speak to Richard at the track & the the old meetings WKC had in the 90s . He was always helpful & i enjoyed his company & friendship. He will be missed . Though i stopped racing in 2006 i still go to watch & see the handful of friends that have still managed to hang on to our beloved Laydowns . Richard was a great guy & i will along with all that knew him will miss him . We have lost several members i knew during my years with the club & they were a big part of why we race . To all of his family you have my deepest sympathy.

Jane, Didn´t have much interaction with Richard but I remember how he arranged to have a Photographer come to ECHO for some project we were doing. He gave me the impression "You could always count on Richard". You are in my thoughts and prayers. Peace.
