Richard Hallgren Obituary

Hallgren

Richard Edwin Hallgren "Dick" (Age 91)

Dick Hallgren, 91, of Silver Spring, MD, passed away on November 5, 2023. He was born on March 15, 1932, in Toby Valley, PA, to the late Edwin 'Scotty' Hallgren and Edith Caimi Hallgren. Dick is survived by his wife of 69 years, Maxine Hope Anderson Hallgren, their beloved rescue dog, Toby, (named after their hometown) and their three children, Scott Edwin Hallgren and his wife Toni, Douglas Harry Hallgren and his life partner, Pam, and Lynette Hallgren Scaffidi and her husband Rick. He will also be dearly missed by his grandchildren Jessica Hallgren Haines and her husband Richard, Jeffrey Hallgren and his girlfriend Alexa, Douglas Hallgren, Karissa Scaffidi, Samie Scaffidi, and Cory Scaffidi, as well as his great-grandchildren Connor and Dylan.

Dick was a man of many accomplishments and interests. He always loved participating in a good, engaging debate and never swayed from a challenge, especially if it required analyzing and processing information. He received his PhD in Meteorology and Physics from Penn State in 1960. Dick served for 2 years in the Korean War as an Air Force weather forecaster and liaison officer for the Strategic Air Command.

Throughout his career, Dick made significant contributions to the field of meteorology. He served as the Director of the National Weather Service, Acting Director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), President of the World Meteorological Society, and Executive Director of the American Meteorological Society. His expertise and dedication earned him numerous awards and the respect of his colleagues.

The family will host a Celebration of Life in the Spring, around the time of Dick's preferred ideal ambient weather temperature of 64.2 degrees Fahrenheit (Dad's Meteorologist kinda joke!). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Meteorological Society or the Humane Society.

Dick Hallgren's legacy will live on through his contributions to the field of meteorology and the impact he had on his family and friends. He will be remembered as a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. May his soul find eternal peace.

We are remembering our many interesting conversations during
those good food and wine outings. (And his passion for extra
onions on the salads.)
Sending our deepest sympathy at this difficult time to Maxine
and family.
