RICHARD SLYE Obituary

RICHARD LESTER SLYE "Dick"  February 16, 1942 - April 25, 2021
Richard "Dick" Lester Slye passed away surrounded by his family on April 25, 2021 after courageously battling melanoma. He was predeceased by his parents, R. Earl and Lenora Lester Slye as well as his sister, Carolyn Ann Slye. Affectionately known by those who loved him as "Poppy", he was a devoted family man whose jovial nature endeared him to anyone he met. His gentle disposition coupled with his warm smile, heartfelt hugs and boisterous laugh infused the world around him with kindness and love. A native Washingtonian and a third-generation florist, Dick joined the family business after graduating from the University of Tampa and managed the business for 35 years. An avid sportsman, he never shied away from embracing adventure whether sailing, flying, fishing, hiking and loved spending time in the great outdoors. As a master sailor, he spent as much time as he could sailing his cherished boat, "the Banshee" on the Chesapeake Bay. A true renaissance man, he also enjoyed spending time in his workshop making beautiful furniture and crafts.  He will be dearly missed by his childhood sweetheart and beloved wife of 56 years, Mary Margaret "Peggy", their five children and spouses: Betsy (Richard Minton), Richard Jr. (Lori), Cathy (Jon Howard), Meg (Ed Tomlin) and Jack (Alisha) in addition to his fourteen grandchildren and one great grandson. The family will gather for a Celebration of Life on May 15, 2021 in a private ceremony. To honor his legacy and love of sailing, the family asks that donations be made in Dick's name to The Chesapeake Bay Foundation www.cbf.org.
