RICHARD STORCH Obituary

STORCH RICHARD LOUIS STORCH Richard Louis Storch, 75, of Washington, DC, and Waterford, Virginia, died August 9, 2012, of complications from lymphoma. Richard was born on November 6, 1936, in Evanston, Illinois, to Howard Louis Storch and Marguerite Lundberg Storch. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Pamela Little Storch; his sons, R. Adam Storch and Mark William Storch (married to Margaret Crawford Storch); and his daughter, Cecily Storch Anderson (married to Eric Le Rennie Anderson); his grandchildren, Charlotte Marguerite and E. Spencer Anderson; his sister, Gretchen Storch Hull of Seattle, Washington; and his extended family of five nephews, five great-nieces and seven great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Marguerite Storch Ball and his nephew, Charles Ball. Richard grew up in Kenilworth, Illinois, and attended New Trier High School. He graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University, served as an aide to Clarence B. Randall in the Eisenhower administration, and earned a Masters at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. For five years afterwards Richard was a US Foreign Service Officer stationed in Lome, Togo, and Beirut, Lebanon - a city he loved and remained in for his next job, representing and opening branches for the Continental Bank in the Middle East. Returning to the United States and determined to make a positive contribution, Richard joined the World Bank. He stayed there for fourteen productive years, eventually becoming Managing Director for the Europe Division of the International Finance Corporation. In the last and longest of his several careers (he would joke that there were more to come), Richard adopted the family business, real estate, but developed a true passion for the restoration and preservation of historic buildings. Over the course of twenty-eight years, Richard invested in projects in Dupont Circle and throughout Loudoun County, taking great pride in the tangible improvements he made and the diverse people with whom he worked. The focal point of his efforts and attentions became the historic town of Waterford, Virginia, and specifically his home there, which he meticulously and lovingly restored for himself and his family. Richard was a member of the Metropolitan and Chevy Chase Clubs, as well as the Hillsboro Club of Florida. A lifelong athlete, his many friends will remember him as a tenacious and vigorous player of tennis and squash who refused to golf until his second knee replacement left him no choice. Initial reluctance was overcome by natural competitiveness, and Richard applied the same urgent but methodical determination to the game that he did to every other aspect of his life. A loving and devoted husband, son, and father, Richard took great interest in and responsibility for not only his own family but also the many others he attracted by virtue of his easy humor, great generosity, and earnest concern. He is sorely missed. A funeral service will be held September 8, 2012 at Christ Church, Georgetown. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his name to "Stanford University," memo line: "Kim/Weng Research Fund, 326 Galvez Street, Stanford, California 94305."
