ROBERT BORAKS Obituary

ROBERT ALAN WIT BORAKS
Of Rockville, Maryland, died peacefully on May 17, 2018 at 75 years of age, after an extended battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder. A talented and accomplished trial lawyer who also argued a landmark Supreme Court parental rights case, Bob Boraks was a graduate of The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania and of The George Washington Law School, where he was an associate editor of the Law Review. He served with distinction with both the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia and the DC Public Defender Service. Subsequently, he had a long and successful career as a litigator with several law firms, most recently with the Washington office of Garvey Schubert & Barer and with the firm of Kalbian Hagerty. Bob is survived by his sister, Judy Cohan of St. Petersburg Beach, FL, his brother, Stanley of Brooksville, FL, and his former wives, Ronnie Hay of Northern Virginia, Nicola Maria Barthen of St. Thomas, Mary Craig of Alexandria, VA, and Sue Edwards of Washington, DC. Memories of Bob's wisdom, kindness and humor will be especially cherished by his beloved daughter, Alexandra Boraks, a published author residing in New York City, two step-children, James Moran, of Dallas, TX., and Mary Elise Moran, of Arlington, VA., and several nieces and nephews, who also honor his memory. Bob Boraks, a sage and wit, a mentor to numerous lawyers, a big brother and an all-around wonderful man, will be sorely missed and remembered by legions of long-time friends, three dozen of whom recently joined him in celebrating his 75th birthday. A memorial celebration will be held in September, on a date and at a venue to be announced.

Bob was my fraternity brother at Penn and someone everyone looked to for humor and we often sought his advice. He was a talented guy in everything he attempted. For years after we graduated I would sometimes call him to get some suggestions on one of the civil cases I was handling and left the call uplifted and helped. It's a funny thing to say, but being around him was like seeing a puppy-you immediately started grinning. It could not be helped. Sokes, 1968
