Entered into eternal rest on Monday, April 11, 2016. He is survived by his loving wife, Candie Copeland; children, Kennedie, Robert III and Lucas; parents, Edgar and Joy Dudley; one brother, James D. Copeland (Pamela), mother- in-law, Janice Lucas; brother-in-law, Michael Lucas, other loving relatives and friends. Viewing will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, 2016, followed by Homegoing services at 11 a.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church. 1500 9th St., N.W. Interment private. Dr. Copeland was the best! A brilliant, compassionate, and outstanding doctor who sincerely cared for his patients and treated them as friends. He always talked much about his family who he cherished and loved very much. I will forever miss him. Always think of him when I enter the Ophthalmology Department at HUH. Still miss this brotha so much. He was my "joanin" doc and we were time and a half for each other as we both cracked up. He took care of my eyes and all HYOU colleagues swore Dr. Copeland was THEIR personal eye doc. Continue to rest well doc. We all miss you.

I had a chance to shadow Dr Copeland for 2 weeks after my 2nd year in medical school. He was a phenomenal physician in the way he treated his patients and I learned a lot from him as a person. I always felt he was a very underrated physician in the surgical department. RIP Dr Copeland

We all will miss Dr. Copeland. At Bible study last night there was universal agreement that he was a very nice man by all who knew him. Seeing him was more like visiting an old friend than seeing a doctor. For many years Dr. Copeland was my ophthalmologist and I always saw objects as well as life clearer after spending time with Dr. Copeland while he did his magic. My condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, loved ones and patients of Dr. Robert A. Copeland. I first met this man while a student at Howard University. I had an eye emergency and was referred to him for follow-up. This was back in the late 1980's. I recall his excellent care. This ophthalmologist helped save my sight. I Googled his name recently because I was considering going back to the DC area and needed an ophthalmologist. I was shocked and dismayed to hear of Dr. Copeland's passing. He is now resting eternally with his maker.
