Robert,
Your memory continues to be honored through the lives of your children, family and friends.
Those who served along side you have not forgotten you either. Your best friend, SSG Wilkerson, speaks of you often.
Buildings have been dedicated in your name.
I have stayed in touch with some of the Rough Riders who served with you or who were in the sister platoon. *I would really like to reach out and reconnect to all the Rough Riders who served then.
Several Rough Riders became pen pals with second graders from San Diego and regularly received care packages filled with banners and cards that hung in the day room where you all spent much of your time. I welcome hearing updates from your children and from the Rough Riders. I can be reached at [email protected].
As we approach the 11th anniversary of your passing may all who remember be comforted in knowing you are standing watch over us as we await the day when we will once again meet on heaven's shores.

To: SSG Robert Hernandez Family. Your Son, Father, Fiancé, I was on the convoy that dreadful rainy day in Iraq on March 28,2006. He was a great soldier and a even greater individual with a big heart. There wasn't a time you would see him without his Battle Buddy, SSG Wilkerson as the move around the IZ compound. He was always smiling and displyed a since of calmness at all times. He always encouraging other and was always positive minded, even when we placed him it the medical vehicle, he looked at me and gave me a thumbs up! On that day I got in the vehicle he was riding on, I was setting on his side and he told me " Now CSM, you know you are in the wrong vehicle".I owe SSG Hernandez a great deal of gratitude.Never a moment goes by I don't think about SSG Hernandez. There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers
Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever
Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away
Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go
We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light
Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray
Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

To the family of SSG Robert Hernandez:
I wanted to tell you how sorry I was to learn of his death.
I am an Air Force officer currently stationed in Upstate New York.
For the 6 months that I was deployed to Iraq, I had the honor of serving in the same command (Multi-National Security Transition Command-Iraq) as SSG Hernandez.
I must say that I only had the opportunity to meet SSG Hernandez briefly, but I remember him well. I had the privilege of riding next to him in a Hummvee on a convoy from Baghdad to Taji back in September. SSG Hernandez kept me safe on this convoy, as he did for so many others on so many other convoys. I am in debt to him forever for the security that he provided as a member of the Rough Riders, and for the sacrifice that he made for all of us.
I have sent a photo that I took of SSG Hernandez at Camp Taji at the end of the convoy back in September. His great smile is one that I remember even without the photo. I remember very well that he had a positive and outgoing personality that benefited those around him.
I feel very strongly that SSG Hernandez's service in Iraq has made a lasting difference: in the security that he provided to his fellow troops and also in the work that he did to bring freedom to the people of Iraq and to protect our American freedom back home.
I offer my deepest sympathy for your loss.
Thank you.

To the family of SSG Hernandez,
Please know how saddened I was to hear of your loss. I have been a supporter of our Rough Riders for several months and enjoyed getting to know them. Our Rough Riders are among some of the best we have.
SSG Hernandez led a life dedicated to protecting others. I pray you know that there are so many, of which I am but one, who are so very grateful for his service, for his sacrifices. I will not forget that he gave his all in defense of this great nation.
I pray that memories of who he was and what he stood for will comfort you in those dark hours of sorrow and loneliness.
I think I may have a photo or two of him in my files. Please feel free to get in touch with me so I can share it with you.
May our Lord and God bless you and keep you in His ever loving arms.

Difficult to understand why God takes some home, and others of us have to stay here and carry on. Just concentrate on the good aspects of his life, and know that he would desire for family and friends to be brave and bear up under the horrible news of his loss. Patriotic words seem hollow when I consider that words cannot replace a human heart or smile. Am at a loss...just know that there are people here still on duty in Iraq that grieve. I pray that some good, some how, will come of all this.

This is Hector, I was visiting PR when Cuchi told me the bad news, I have lost family and friends through the years as a peace officer and military man, it never gets easy. You died doing what you loved and that was protecting others and serving your country, by doing this you have honored Puerto Rico, your family and us. I will missed you and I will always remember you, specially that playful smile of yours. I am so proud of you and to have called you friend. Remember you taught me to how to eat "pupusas" with "malta india" at Lorenzo's while working midnites in DC. To: SSG Robert Hernandez Family. Your Son, Father, Fiancée, was my friend, a brave convoy team member of MNSTC-I J3 serving for the 80th Division and truly America’s Finest Soldier serving in the United States Army Reserves. “Mr. Smiles,” I called SSG Hernandez was always there to support our mission and always had a smile to brighten up anyone’s bad day. Although I am not assigned to the 80th Division I had the privilege and honor to serve with SSG Hernandez here at MNSTC-I. I always-spend time talking with him and the other convoy members while they prepare for their everyday mission. He was a wonderful troop that I really enjoyed laughing with and will continuously be proud of him. SSG Hernandez, never to be replace, forgotten but always remembered. SSG HERNANDEZ I SALUTE YOU! Robert,
You always had an infectious smile and a can-do fun attitude. It was truly an honor to have worked with you. We are in your debt for making the ultimate sacrifice for the protection of our country and our families. You will be missed and never forgotten.

To the Family of Staff Sgt. Robert Hernandez:
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life. We lost our son 12/1/05.
I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with. I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally, but none of these courageous men and women will be forgotten. They will never be able to be replaced, but sometime, someday your loving memories will help to sustain you. This courageous soldier will forever now be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well. To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort. When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero. God Bless this courageous soldier and family.
