Robert Gregory Joyce

Robert Gregory Joyce (77) of Silver Spring, MD, May 14, 2024 after a brief illness. The son of Katherine McHugh and John Joyce, Bob was born, raised, and educated in Newton, MA. A brilliant student and athlete, he spent his high school junior year as an American Field Service student in Talcahuano, Chile, where he played basketball and made many friends.
Bob won a full scholarship to Williams College, earning a BA in political economics, studying one year at the acclaimed Institut d'études politiques in Paris, and earned an MA in Public Administration from the Maxwell School of Syracuse University, where he met his future wife, Mary Elizabeth LaFleur. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year.
Bob's 40-year Federal career included service as a budget and systems analyst and program manager at the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the U.S. Department of Energy, where he ran an innovative program that attracted many young scientists and engineers to the Department.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and older brother, Stephen. His survivors include his wife, Mary Elizabeth; his sister Martha Harnit (John Hartgering); in-laws Anne P. LaFleur, Vincent A. LaFleur, Sarah LaFleur Friedman, and Virginia H. Joyce, as well as cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on July 13 at Nativity Catholic Church, 6001 13th St NW, Washington, DC 20011. Arrangements by Francis J. Collins Funeral Home. The family welcomes donations in Bob's memory to the American Institute for Cancer Research [aicr.org] or the American Heart Association [heart.org].
