ROBERT MILLER Obituary

MILLER Robert Hopkins Miller (Age 90) Died September 11, 2017 at an assisted-living center in Chevy Chase, MD. Surviving are his daughter, Margaret, of Bethesda, MD; his son and daughter-in-law, George and Andrea of New York City, and his grandchildren, Daphne of Los Angeles, CA and Ted of New York City. Mr. Miller's wife, Kaity died in 2010. Mr. Miller was born September 8, 1927 in Port Angeles, WA He received a B.A. from Stanford University in 1949 and an M.A. in international relations from Harvard University in 1951. During his 40 years in the U.S. Foreign Service, Mr. Miller was a deputy assistant secretary of state in Washington, DC and ambassador to Malaysia (1977-1980) and to C��te d'Ivoire (1983-1986). From 1962 to 1980 Mr. Miller served as First Secretary in the U.S. embassy in Saigon, Vietnam; Director of the Vietnam Working Group in Washington; Senior Adviser to the U.S. delegation to the Vietnam peace talks in Paris, France; and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Southeast Asia, among other posts. While Ambassador to Malaysia, Mr. Miller helped negotiate the resettlement in the United States of tens of thousands of "boat people," refugees from Vietnam following the North Vietnamese takeover of South Vietnam. Mr. Miller served as Vice President of the National Defense University from 1986 to 1989. In 1990 he was Diplomat-in-Residence at George Washington University in Washington, DC Mr. Miller was a member of the American Academy of Diplomacy. After retiring from the Foreign Service in 1991, Mr. Miller served as President of Diplomatic and Consular Officers, Retired (DACOR). He taught, lectured and wrote on various diplomatic and national security subjects, and received awards for his service. Burial will be at Rock Creek Cemetery, 100 Allison Street NW, Washington, DC, on Tuesday, September 19 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to DACOR Bacon House Foundation, 1801 F Street NW, Washington, DC or to any favorite charity engaged in humanitarian operations abroad.Burial will be at Rock Creek Cemetery, 100 Allison Street NW, Washington, DC, on Tuesday, September 19 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to DACOR Bacon House Foundation, 1801 F Street NW, Washington, DC or to any favorite charity engaged in humanitarian operations abroad.

My deepest condolences for your loss of both your father and your mother. They were very close friends throughout our diplomatic lives together, seldom on the same continent at the same time, but our lives intertwined.
