I first met Robert (Bob) in 1979 when he was working at Comsat Labs. He was always genial and insightful. A gentlemanly and knowledgeable technologist for sure. Later, when he had become an independent contractor, we worked together collaboratively at INTELSAT, co-publishing a first-of-its-kind analysis of the in-orbit reliability of the entire fleet of operational INTELSAT V series satellites. It transpired that that work had financial ramifications for all geostationary telecommunications satellite operators (well beyond what we two together thought was just an interesting survey and some allied statistical projections). Bob initially undertook all of the survey of in-orbit anomalies and satellite component failures, very thoroughly, over many months, during which time I did not take his efforts too seriously at all. But, he gradually talked me around. (I really benefitted from his patience and encouragement.) The outcome was a neat professional accomplishment on his part, given his much earlier involvement with the INTELSAT I (Early Bird) program. I am truly saddened to learn of his passing and offer sincere condolences to his family.

I worked with Bob shortly after I joined INTELSAT R&D in 1979. My early work was with TWTAs which I had no background in and Bob became my mentor Our paths continued to intersect for the next 30 years. I will miss Bob.
