ROGER BURKE Obituary

BURKE ROGER WILLIAM BURKE, JR. Roger William Burke, Jr., 67, passed away peacefully at his home on June 4, 2014, from complications of diabetes. Born on December 3, 1946, in Plainfield, New Jersey, Roger attended public schools, and graduated from Plainfield High School. He attended York College (Pennsylvania) where, in following his lifelong passion, he was an outstanding baseball player, before transferring to The George Washington University, where he received his B.A. Degree in History in 1970. He was among the first entering class at the Antioch College School of Law, (now the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law), from where he received his J.D. Degree in 1976. He also served for six years as a military police officer in the District of Columbia National Guard, receiving an honorable discharge. Roger had a distinguished career as an attorney devoted to public service. He commenced his legal career as a law clerk to the late Honorable Julia Cooper Mack of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals. He then represented the United States Government in the Office of the Solicitor, Department of Labor (Civil Rights Division) and the Department of Justice, Criminal Division (Organized Crime and Racketeering Section). He also served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney (Criminal Division), Washington, D.C., during which time among many other roles, he traveled to Abuja, Nigeria on a special assignment with the Department of Justice to train prosecutors and investigators to ferret out Nigerian government corruption. Roger left Washington for a brief stint with the United States Attorney's Office in the Southern District of Alabama, before returning to become the Chief of Staff to the District of Columbia Inspector General, where he was at time of his death. During Roger's tenure in service to the United States he received numerous awards for his meritorious achievements and sustained superior performance. In addition to being an avid baseball fan (his favorite team was the San Francisco Giants) and enjoying cooking a great meal, Roger loved to fish and would take every opportunity to follow his hobby, fishing in such places as South Padre Island, Texas; Houma, Louisiana; Gulf Shores, Alabama; the U.S. Virgin Islands and Costa Rica. Although he faced health and mobility challenges in the later years of his life, Roger remained determined to see them through, live a full life and was an inspiration to those who were close to him. Left to cherish Roger's memory are his daughter, Jennifer Leila Sloane and son-in-law, Adam Sloane, his granddaughter, Ella, his mother, Myrtle E. Burke, his sister, Beverly J. Burke; nephews Nathaniel and Benjamin Saunders, and a host of other family and friends. His marriage to E. Kathleen Shahan ended in divorce, but the two remained friends. His father, Roger W. Burke, Sr. and his brother-in-law, Gregory S. Saunders, preceded Roger in death. A memorial program and reception in recognition of Roger's life will be held on Friday, July 11, 2014, starting at 7:00 pm, at the Woodend Nature Santuary, 8940 Jones Mill Road, Chevy Chase, MD. Please see www.audubonnaturalist.org for directions. In lieu of flowers, you may make contributions in Roger's name to the Washington Animal Rescue League, 71 Oglethorpe Street, N.W, Washington, D.C. 20011, or to the American Diabetes Association (Attention: Dhonyale Metoyer), 1701 N. “The Giants win the Pennant! The Giants win the Pennant!” It was October 1954. My cousin Roger and I were both eight years old.

As I remember it, Roger was still excited, hours if not days after the game was over. “Did you hear it? Did you hear it?” He might even have been jumping up and down. He was asking if I had heard the announcer scream those words at the close of the final game of the World Series: the New York Giants had defeated the Cleveland Indians. Bless you, Roger – once a Giants fan, always a Giants fan!

To Jennifer, my Aunt Myrtle, Beverly, Nathaniel, Ben, and all those who knew and loved him, please accept my deepest condolences for the loss of someone so fine and dear. I know in my heart that the memory of his love and loyalty will always remain with you, and pray that you continue to find comfort in one another. May your private and shared memories only become sweeter with time.

To the Burke Family,

Roger was first my business associate and finally, and, most importantly, my friend. He always had a smile on his face. A smile that beamed with the kindness and joy that existed within him. And often, that smile accompanied some joke or story that would make whomever he was speaking with laugh. Those are the things I will miss most about Roger, but that I will also always remember. He made me smile, he made me laugh, he made me happy. He will be missed.

To the Burke Family,

Roger was one of the kindest, most generous people I have had the pleasure to work with. I will miss his sharp wit and sense of humor. I will miss his smile and the light he brought to the OIG.

Jennifer, Aunt Myrtle, Beverly-
We are saddened to learn of Roger's passing. I have fond memories of the time he and I got together when I was in DC on a recruiting trip for Russell Sage College. We laughed, swapped stories of our youth and family get togethers and enjoyed a great meal. I was thrilled to learn that he enjoyed reading the genealogy research I compiled on the family. He fought a long battle and was triumphant for a long time. God called him home and now it's time for Roger to enjoy a well deserved and peaceful rest. Heartfelt condolences to all of you. Cherish his memory and he'll be with you always.

Dear Mrs. Burke, Beverly, Kathleen, Jennifer, and all the family,
Please accept my heartfelt condolences in your loss of Roger. I'm sorry I wasn't able to be at his memorial service. I met Roger when I came to work at the Labor Department as a young attorney. I sat in his division of the Solicitor's Office (i.e., the Civil Rights Division) for my first two weeks, until I received my permanent assignment. During those weeks, Roger was friendly, helpful, and encouraging. After I left his division, over the years, Roger and I would chit chat in the hallways of DOL if we happened to run into each other. He was like an older brother to me and let me know that he was available should I need his help or counsel. I always appreciated that kindness very much.

Roger was a good man. I know that this is a great loss and that Roger will be deeply missed. I have been keeping you all in my daily prayers and you will continue to be there for some time. May each of you come through this difficult season with a profound awareness of God's presence and His love for you.

I met Roger at GW in 1968. We lived at Welling Hall, which is long gone. We partied, played a lot of pick-up hoops, and studied enough to get through. Amazingly, we both became lawyers. I moved back to York, Pa, my hometown, but we kept in touch and remained good friends.. Jack Nargil called and informed me of Roger's death. I was deeply saddened. I will miss you, Bro.

To the family of Roger Burke,

I had the pleasure of working with Roger from the time he joined the DC Office of the Inspector General until his passing. I found him to be kind and enjoyed his sense of humor. During his holiday open house, I met his family: sister, Beverly, daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter. He was so happy to be able to share you all with us--his co-workers, friends, and neighbors.

May the memories of his love and the prayers and thoughts of others who care sustain you during the difficult moments. Weeping endures for a night, but joy comes in the morning.

Roger, you are gone, but never forgotten.

I moved to Plainfield when I was 9, and met Roger in elementary school. We were friends through high school, and even got together a few times in college. I was in Gettysburg, close to both York and DC. Although I only saw him a couple of times over the last 40 years, we stayed in touch. He arranged a tour of the FBI Building for my young son and me. As was noted, Roger was a Giants fan, and I was a Yankee fan, and we had many Willie Mays vs. Mickey Mantle arguments during our youth. The last time we spoke, a book about the two of them came out, and I admitted to him that he was right, and Mays was better. RIP, my friend.

Roger Burke was a colleague and close friend of mine in the OCRS Labor Unit of DOJ. One of the truly "great guys" in my professional life. He will be sorely missed. My condolences to his family and friends.

To Beverly and all of Roger's family,
Roger was a good colleague at the U.S. Attorney's Office. He told great stories which could make you laugh. He loved to fish. I will always remember that. My sympathy to all of you.
