RONALD MARK LANDSMAN

Ronald Mark (Ron M.) Landsman, 74, of Garrett Park, Maryland, died on March 4, 2023 from complications of acute myeloid leukemia.

Ron Landsman was born in January 1949 in Detroit, Michigan. He attended Oak Park High School and earned a BA in history at the University of Michigan, where he served as managing editor of The Michigan Daily. After graduation from Michigan Law School he worked with consumer advocate Ralph Nader and as a clerk on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the former Fifth Circuit, before joining the antitrust division of the U.S. Department of Justice.

In 1984 Ron created one of the first law firms in the country devoted solely to the practice of special needs and elder law. Sometimes referred to as "Mr. Maryland Medicaid," he was a founding member and fellow of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA). He authored amicus briefs for NAELA and the Special Needs Alliance. His litigation activity included a landmark class action case against the Maryland Medicaid program in which it agreed to contribute $16 million to cover pre-eligibility medical expenses of nursing home residents.

Ron was an enthusiastic gardener and an avid woodworker, a long-time member of the Woodworkers' Club in Rockville, Maryland.

Ron is survived by his wife, Irene Smith Landsman, of Garrett Park, MD, children Ezra Jane Landsman of Seattle WA and Patrick Cavanagh of Pelham, MA, and grandsons, Samuel Cavanagh and Benjamin Cavanagh.

A memorial service will be held on Friday April 28 at 2:30 p.m. at River Road Unitarian Universalist Church at 6301 River Road, Bethesda, MD.
