ROSEMARY MORONEY Obituary

ROSEMARY NEWMAN MORONEY   (Age 96)
Of Washington, DC, died peacefully at her home in the Knollwood Military Retirement Community on May 19, 2015. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and mother-in-law and a gracious friend to all who knew her. Known as "Rummy" to family and friends, she was born on September 15, 1918, in the U.S. Panama Canal Zone, the daughter of U.S. Army cavalry officer Col. Richard D. Newman and Mary Whittier Shields of Sewickley, PA. She grew up as a pound "Army Brat" living on Army posts around the country including nearby Fort Myer. In 1940, she met and married her husband of 57 years, William Martin Moroney, who preceded her in death in 1997. Throughout her life, in addition to being an active homemaker, she served as a Red Cross ambulance driver and plane spotter during World War II, later she was active in the PTA, Cub Scouts, a tutoring disadvantaged grade school students. She was a life-long member of the Army Navy Country Club where she was an avid tennis player until retiring at 85. She also tried her hand at auto mechanics later in life. She is survived by her adoring family and friends including her son, Bill, her daughter-in-law, Tracy, her grandson, Michael-Patrick and his wife Cara. Her wishes were to have only a simple graveside service where she will be interred with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at 3 p.m. It was also her wishes that, in lieu of flowers, well-wishers make a contribution to the charity of their choice.
