ROY I. BROOKS

ROY IRVING BROOKS (Age 93)  
Of Falls Church, VA passed away on Sunday, July 6, 2014 after an eight month battle with cancer. Born October 20, 1920 in Houston, TX, he was the loving and devoted husband of the late Elizabeth Stewart Brooks with whom he enjoyed a 55 year marriage. He is survived by his two sons, Roy Stewart Brooks (Camille) and Robert Scott Brooks (Mabel); eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Merchant Marine from 1942-1946. Dr. Brooks graduated from Texas A & M, Boston University (M.Ed), and George Washington University (Ed.D). He had a long career in education first as a teacher, later as a guidance counselor, and 18 years as a principal with Fairfax County Public Schools. He was the principal who opened Washington Irving Intermediate School and served as the principal from 1960-1974. He then was principal of Luther Jackson Intermediate School from 1974 until his retirement in 1978. Dr. Brooks was active in the Fairfax Education Association, Virginia Education Association, and Fairfax County Intermediate Principals Association. He was very active with the Fairfax County Democratic Party Mason District, Skyline Precinct for many years. Dr. Brooks was an avid Redskins fan and one of his favorite pastimes was attending or watching the football games. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, July 17, 1 p.m. at Little River United Church of Christ, 8410 Little River Turnpike, Annandale, VA 22003.
