RUBY C. BROOM

Ruby Christine Broom died December 12, 2022 at age 91. Funeral services are pending.

Ruby was born January 26, 1931 in San Antonio, Texas. Ruby was the daughter of Robert Earl Broom and Sarah Alice "Dollie" Gillean of Delta County, Texas. Ruby's early childhood with her parents and seven siblings was spent in the small community of Pecan Gap in Delta County during the height of the Great Depression. In 1941, her family relocated to Artesia, New Mexico, where Ruby graduated from Artesia High School in 1948. She joined the U.S. Navy in 1951, and was stationed in Chicago, San Diego and Pearl Harbor. After leaving the Navy in 1955, Ruby settled in Wichita Falls, Texas. Later she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration. Ruby moved to Washington, D.C. in 1970 and worked at the Washington Post until her retirement in 1991. While in D.C., Ruby volunteered her services at the Central Union Mission and was a generous benefactor. She was also instrumental in recruiting corporate donors for the mission, and was the first woman to sit on the mission's board of directors. Ruby moved to Asbury Methodist Retirement Village in Gaithersburg, Maryland in 2001 where she lived until recently resettling with loved ones in Florida. Ruby was a lifelong follower of the Pentecostal faith. She enjoyed attending church, singing hymns, playing the piano, volunteering in the community, traveling, reading and working crossword puzzles.

Ruby is predeceased by her parents and immediate family: sisters Alice Lee, Laverne Ison, Jean Cates and Earlene Branson; brothers Bill Broom, Sr., Drew Broom, and Eddie Broom. She is survived by nieces: Sharon Ison, Susan Winnings, Ami Brown, Christine Lunceford, Dede Yaeger, Druanne Hayes and Marilyn Reinhard; and nephews: Bill Broom, Jr., Phillip Broom, Monte Broom, Roger Broom, Raymon Lee, Billy Lee, John Cates, David Cates, Shaun Bird, Stuart Bird and Les Branson. Ruby is also survived by many great-nieces and great-nephews who will also miss her dearly.
