Samuel Saint Obituary

SAINT, SAMUEL PROCTOR (Age 90)

Died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at the Lebanon Valley Brethren Home in Palmyra, PA. He was born in Wyncote, PA and grew up in Huntington Valley, PA. Sam was the son of Lawrence B. Saint, renowned stained glass artist, and Katherine Proctor Saint. He was a retired American Airlines Captain and finished his 37 year flying career piloting the 747 aircraft. Captain Saint was an innovator and pioneer in the use of airborne radar. He also played a major role in the development of the instrument landing system that is utilized worldwide. He was internationally recognized as an expert in the area of air traffic control development and was honored with several awards for his contributions. During WWII, he was retained by the United States Navy to increase landing rates on aircraft carriers. Saint was one of the very few pilots ever to be given the Distinguished Service Award by American Airlines. Following his retirement from the airlines in 1971, Mr. Saint continued his career as a consultant for Safe Flight Corporation, becoming an expert in the area of wind shear and testifying before Congress in that capacity. Following that, he was employed by Lincoln Laboratories at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology until the age of 79.

Sam is much loved and survived by his wife of 64 years, Jeanne Castor Saint; three children, Eileen Klang of Sarasota, FL, Betsy Sweet of Basking Ridge, NJ and Robert Saint of Ashaway, RI; two sons-in-law, a daughter-in-law, 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, as well as three brothers. There will be a memorial service at the Lebanon Valley Brethren Home on Friday, June 21, 2002, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Good Samaritan Fund, Lebanon Valley Brethren Home, 1200 Grubb St., Palmyra, PA 17078.
