Sheldon Krys Obituary

Sheldon Jack Krys, a distinguished career foreign service officer and dear friend to many, died on October 18, 2024, at the age of 90. Born in New York on June 15, 1934, Sheldon had a remarkable career. A graduate of Coolidge High School in Washington, DC, and University of Maryland, he worked in radio and public relations, and on John F. Kennedy's presidential campaign. Sheldon joined the U.S. Foreign Service in 1962, embarking on what would become a storied career. Throughout his years at the State Department, he held several notable positions, including U.S. Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago, Assistant Secretary of State for Administration, and Assistant Secretary for Diplomatic Security; and he played a vital role in bringing both the Canadian Six and American hostages home from Iran in 1981. Sheldon received both the Department of State Distinguished Honor Award and the Presidential Meritorious Service Award. He served six years on the Peabody Awards Board of Jurors, serving as board chair from 1993 to 1995. He received a Doctor of Philosophy (Honorary) from St. John Fisher College in 1996.
A man of great intellect and wry humor, Sheldon was known for his ability to connect with people from all walks of life. He cared deeply for his friends and family and went out of his way to ensure others felt welcome, included, and cared for. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Sheldon was predeceased by his beloved wife of nearly 50 years, Doris Krys (née de Hemptinne). He is survived by his children Wendy Calvert (Scott), Madeleine Menashe (Jack), and Susan Krys (Ken Bocam), and grandchildren Ella Krys Menashe and Edouard "Teddy" Bocam.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on October 23, 2024, at Judean Memorial Gardens, Olney, MD, with interment following. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Senior Living Foundation of the American Foreign Service or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Arrangements entrusted to TORCHINSKY HEBREW FUNERAL HOME, 202-541-1001.

Sheldon was such a lovely person. I was honored to get to know him over the last several years while presenting programs for Jewish Art Education at Brightview Woodmont. He was the very first resident I met there and we instantly bonded over our mutual interests in history, art, and genealogy. May his memory be for a blessing.

We will always cherish knowing Sheldon; for over 40 years he was our unfailingly wise friend, mentor, and confidant. Whether helping us adjust to life after our Iran experience, supporting Joe´s Foreign Service career moves, or advising Kathleen on her artistic endeavors, he was always there for us. We will miss both he and Doris, such rare souls.

I looked forward to visiting my mother in law at Brightview because it gave me the opportunity to also spend time with Sheldon who would regale me with his diplomat stories only because I begged him to do so. He was a humble brilliant and kind gentleman. On one of my last visits we played scrabble and he got 76 points (triple word score and a bonus for using all of his 7 letters) for the word Greenery. Sheldon will be missed!

One of the nicest people I got to meet. Great sense of humor. We would talk about Seinfeld episodes. Rest easy my friend and thanks for always being nice and respectful to me always.

My dear Uncle Sheldon
Tu vas me manquer énormément.
