SIDNEY HARRIS

On November 9, 2022, Sidney Harris died after a brief period of illness. He lived a full life, enjoying a wide range of activities. He was born during the Depression, in October, 1931 to parents Michael and Rose Harris of Brooklyn, NY. His father died when Sidney was seven, so he worked odd jobs even as a youngster. He began Baruch College as a part-time night student, graduating in 1953. Following college he served in the Army, mostly in Linz, Austria. After the Army, the GI Bill made possible a law degree from George Washington School of Law. His law career extended from representing defendants at the DC Jail, through the Department of Justice, several DC law firms and culminating in service as a patent and trademark judge with the International Trade Commission. In 2003 he received the Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award from Baruch College. In remarks at that event, Sidney emphasized that his life demonstrated what young people can become if education is accessible and affordable.

As a 10-year old in December of 1941, he listened to President Roosevelt's address to the nation following Pearl Harbor. He knew the world had changed. Thereafter he followed World War II events, history and personalities through newspapers, maps, books, films, television and classes, such as those at OLLI of AU. He was an avid cyclist, reader, cook, and consumer of current events. He enjoyed travel, chamber music, Broadway musicals, baseball, soccer and wrestling.

He shared many of his interests with his children Michael Harris (Rachel), Richard Harris, and Jessica Harris, as well as his partner of many years, Arlene Stein. He delighted in all of his grandchildren, Ayala Pearl (Isaac), Gila Harris, Rena Harris, Esther Harris, Dovid Harris, Jacqueline Harris, Alexander Harris, Lucas Harris and great-grandchildren Yossi and Gavi Pearl.

Gifts in his memory may be made to the Vici Syndrome Foundation, Inc., 11431 Amherst Avenue - Number 2548, Silver Spring MD 20902. A graveside service was held November 11, 2022 at Mt Lebanon Cemetery.

Sid was a longtime member of our bookclub and a Bethesda neighbor.

We bonded as native New Yorker transplants in the DC burbs.

We fondly remember Sid's insightful bookclub comments, and his beautiful singing voice.

A kind and generous man, who loved talking about books, Sid will be missed.

Deepest condolences to his family, and to his partner, Arlene.

May his memory be a blessing.
