SIEGBERT PORITZKY Obituary

PORITZKY SIEGBERT B. PORITZKY On April 9, 2015, Siegbert B. Poritzky, 88, of Chevy Chase, Maryland died peacefully after a short illness. He was the beloved husband for 63 years of the late Selma Eileen Poritzky, who predeceased him in 2014. They had three children, but tragically lost two to illness in young adulthood (Susan 1978; Paul 1987). He is survived by his daughter, Ann Poritzky Karbeling (Michael); twin grandsons, Daniel Karbeling and Jason Karbeling (Senairus); sister, Sylvia Rosegg; sister-in-law, Regina Cohn; nephew, Peter Rosegg (Deena Dray); niece, Carol Rosegg (Arnold Engelman); nephew, Robert Cohn (Susan); Steven Cohn (Joanna) and many, friends and colleagues. After completing his BS in electrical engineering at Iowa State University, he began his career as a leading advocate of continual improvement in the quality and safety of air transportation, with a special emphasis on the science of air traffic control. His work was recognized worldwide. During his career, he served as a senior Vice President - Technical Affairs for the Airport Operators Council International-NA. As the Director of System Engineering Management at the FAA, Poritzky was a member of the FAA inner-circle team which developed the first national Airspace System Modernization Plan. He served as the US member of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Committee on Future Air Navigation Systems (FANS). Prior to joining FAA, he was Director of National Airspace System Engineering for Air Transport Association and worked for Trans World Airlines (TWA), McDonald Aircraft Corpora- tion, Civil Aviation Administration and Aeronautical Radio, Inc. (AIRINC). He was a member of the Air Traffic Control Association (ATCA) and was the 1994 recipient of ATCA's Cliff Burton Medallion Award of Merit for outstanding achievement and contributions which advanced the science of air traffic control. During the second part of his career, he was a valued member of the Montgomery County State's Attorney's office for over 15 years. He served as a Mediation Specialist. In his role he coordinated the mediation of over 2,000 cases which provided resolution of criminal cases without having cases go to trial. He enjoyed his work immensely and he was a master at helping parties resolve their issues. His colleagues will miss his humor, vast knowledge and mostly his dedication to his work. Funeral services will be held at Temple Emanuel, 10101 Connecticut Ave., Kensington, MD on Monday April 13 at 11 a.m. Interment at King David Memorial Gardens, 7482 Lee Hwy., Falls Church, VA. Friends are invited to an informal reception at Ann and Michael's home after the interment. Friends are also welcome at the home of Michael and Ann on Monday and Wednesday evenings, April 13 and April 15 at 7 p.m. or by contacting them. Sieg and I worked together in the engineering side of FAA. He was smart, compassionate, and well respected. His contributions to our aviation system's safety and capacity will benefit generations of passengers. Those of us who had the good fortune to work with Sieg will always remember his passion to make our world a better place.

I was so sorry to hear that Sieg had passed away. He was a friend, and a professional with broad talents. I had lunch with Sieg just a couple of weeks ago. I worked for Sieg for about ten years at the FAA, on the follow-on work stemming from the ending of he AEROSAT satellite program (to put aeronautical satellites over the Atlantic Ocean); this work included oceanic system improvement studies, which included the ICAO Council FANS Committee, etc. Sieg was very successful in accomplishing long term objectives. He and his wife, Selma, were friends that I will continue to miss. We can only hope that time and the wonderful memories of Sieg and his accomplishments will help to ease the pain that his family feels at his passing. Victor Foose

We are so sorry to hear of your great loss. Your dad always welcomed us into your home whenever we visited and made us feel "grown up" during our late adolescent years. May his memory be a blessing to you and your family.
