Stephen Andrews Obituary

Stephen Brian Andrews, 80, passed away at his home in Fredericksburg, Virginia, on March 24, 2025.

Brian was born April 13, 1944, in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. He received his B.S. in Chemistry from Providence College in 1966 and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from MIT in 1971. After his postdoctoral training at Yale University, he became Assistant Professor at the Yale University School of Medicine.

In 1983 he moved to Bethesda, Maryland, to work as a research scientist in the Laboratory of Neurobiology at the National Institutes of Health. He worked at NIH for 31 years, retiring in 2014 as the Chief of the Analytical Cell Biology Section. He continued to collaborate with colleagues after retirement up to the time of his death. He published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers over his career. His work took him around the world from Cambridge to Nice to Sapporo, but it was likely the daily walks to and from NIH, avoiding the beltway traffic, that contributed to his long life.

Brian was married to Sheryl Biesemeier, on August 22, 1969, at the MIT Chapel in Cambridge, Massachusetts. They had two sons and Brian enjoyed being involved in their activities. He was master of a Cub Scout pack, coach of several basketball teams, and a musical mentor, among many other roles.

Brian is survived by his wife Sheryl; his sons Ethan (Natalie) and Mark (Stacy); his grandsons Shepherd, Benjamin, Evan, and Barrett; his siblings Leslie (Anita), Elizabeth, and Richard; his nephews Matthew and Steven (Barbara); and his grandnephew Wesley. He is preceded in death by his beloved dog Nobska and parents Steve and Olga.

His family will miss his sharp wit, sense of humor, and love. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
