Deeply saddened. I was curious was happened to the Powermaster and stumbled across this page. Steve was instrumental in turning me from an angry, frustrated teen and harnessing that into positive, productive energy. He was an incredible role model for all his students, helping people regardless of race, religion, sex, or economic status. I trained at and helped Steve with the dojo in Baltimore before heading to college. Unfortunately lost touch after he moved to Las Vegas. I'm happy to see he impacted many others positively.

There are many adjectives which encapsulate your spirit - humble, generous, and kind to name a few. In terms of a single quality, however, it's your capacity for joy that I will always carry with me. That joy manifested through the relationships you cultivated with students, colleagues, and peers alike. Service to others was your life's work, and at every turn you succeeded. You challenged each of your students to grow inside as well as outside of the dojo - to be excellent in more arenas than the martial arts and continue to aspire and learn. I'm so fortunate to have been mentored by you, and I hope to carry on your legacy of leading by example.

from the very moment we met at Miami International Airport, working for CBP, you seem to have left quite the mark within me. It is because of you, that I began competing in the Florida Police & Fire Games, later becoming the Florida First Responder Games, and the Worlds Police & Fire Games. I will carry your name & legacy proudly at this year's Games in Rotterdam...as it'll be my 1st "International". Your ability to immediately radiate that feeling of "Sensei", was felt by many. Powermaster, as you were known will carry on for Generations to come. Legendary lifter, martial arts & teacher will never be forgotten. May you rest in eternal peace. We have the watch from here. so much pride every time I saw you in that CBP Miami jersey. thank you for your many teachings.

I met Steve over 40 years ago when he walked into a gym where I was working out. Steve, already a Black Belt Karate Master, wanted to learn about weight lifting and offered personal karate lessons in exchange for showing him how to incorporate weight lifting into his fitness regimen. We began a friendship that included many, many weigh lifting workouts where Steve just devoured techniques and information that increased muscle size and strength. However, my most unforgettable memories were being trained by Steve at the dojo on Georgia Avenue in the Glenmont Shopping Center in Silver Spring. I spent many nights there receiving personal instruction from Steve in the martial arts. It was also there at Glenmont that I met Bowie, or "Boo-Dean" as Steve use to call him. The sparring sessions between Steve and "Boo-Dean" were memorable. During this time, I frequently met up with Steve at his ice cream shop. It was not lost on me then of the incongruity of watching a heavily muscled Black Belt Karate Master preparing 2 scoops of pistachio for a small child on their way home from school in the afternoon. I also recall lunches with Steve at the Nosh and Nibble in White Oak.

Life took over, as it always does, and Steve and I began our separate journeys. Steve would find his way to Baltimore, where he found acclaim, and happiness I believe, instructing physically and mentally challenged young people in the martial arts. It was also in Baltimore where Steve had a class of 70-something women who simply adored him.

Steve's move to Homeland Security required him to complete an arduous academic and physical training program with students half his age. Steve's mental and physical toughness allowed him to shine in this next chapter of his life. Steve would end up in South Florida with Homeland Security. It was my hope that our time together in the late 70's contributed in some small way to "The Powermaster" setting records in weight lifting and karate competitions at the Police Games where Steve won so many medals over so many years well into his 60's.

I last saw Steve in Miami just before he retired. We met for dinner and it was a wonderful night. He told me he was moving to Las Vegas. When I asked him why, he said because that's where Bowie was and he wanted to be closer to his family. Steve was happy, healthy, full of life, and ready for the next chapter...That's how I remember my good friend Steve...and I hope that my memories of Steve provide some small comfort to those who loved him or who, like me, crossed paths with Steve and were the very fortunate recipients of his friendship...rip "Powermaster"

So many memories. And a battle wound on my chin jumping in the pool at 5 years old that will always make me think of you. We will always love you!
