STEVEN TROWBRIDGE NEWBY

Steven Trowbridge Newby, born September 18, 1946 passed away peacefully after a brief illness on August 23, 2023. He is predeceased by his parents Clinton Toms Newby and Billye Trowbridge Newby of Bethesda, MD and his wife of 47 years Barbara Baldwin Newby of North Potomac, MD. He is survived by his brother Clinton Newby Jr and his four children and spouses, Suzanne Newby-Estes (Deron) of Amherst, MA, Franklin Newby (Bridget) of Bethesda, MD, Patricia Roome (Christopher) of Bethesda, MD and Andrews Newby (Laura) of Granite Bay, CA. He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren: Jackson, Henry, Ryan, Zadie, Matthew, Jones, Declan, Daniel, Isabel, Grayson, Mary and Sam. He was deeply proud of each one.

Born in Inglewood, CA, Steve moved to Kensington, MD in the late 1940s and remained a lifelong resident of the greater Washington area. He found his passion early in life, buying his first share of stock when he was 11 years old. Later, he would work as a research analyst at several boutique investment firms before founding his own brokerage firm, Newby & Company in 1990. He earned numerous professional accolades over the years including becoming a 4-time USA Today National Stock Picking Champion which also catapulted a career of charitable giving. Steve was an ardent believer in investing in the next generation of leaders and underprivileged youth. He made donations to several educational organizations including Project Excellence and the Archbishop Carroll High School. He would go on to establish the Jim Vance Media Program and accompanying scholarships at that school. Outside of his professional and philanthropic endeavors, Steve enjoyed horse racing, classic cars, country music, walking his dogs along the C & O Canal, spending time at the Chesapeake Bay and Turks and Caicos Islands, and meeting up with his longtime high school buddies nearly every Friday night.

Steve's generous spirit touched so many and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your charity of choice. A private memorial will be held at a later date.

What an amazing classmate from our Walter Johnson HS class of 1964. We are all incredibly proud of your accomplishments...your impressive career; your great personal, community and business success; and your never-ending generosity. Perhaps your biggest legacy is friendship. You left behind a great group of classmates who we know are grieving and hanging on to so many wonderful memories. Our hearts go out to your family and the lives you touched as you "gave back" to the community. We only wish we had personally spent more time with you throughout the years. Kind, unassuming and fun to be around...you are missed, Steve. Love, Janette and Gary

Steve Newby....One of my closest, lifetime best friends for over 60 years. Lived together, in each others weddings and God Parents to Andy along with Dennis and Tina Mckay. Have had so many adventures and good times with Steve too numerous to mention. Supported each other through them all. Hardly a couple weeks has gone by in those 60 plus years that we didnt communicate or get together. Loved him, miss him. Brian and Denise Ligon and Family
