TALBOT SPENCE CHUBB

Talbot Spence Chubb, 68, died at home on July 17, 2023, surrounded by his family. He was born in Washington, DC, and raised in Arlington, VA.

Spence is predeceased by his parents, Dr. Talbot A. Chubb and Martha Capps Chubb. He is survived by his wife Debbie, sons Cory and Eric Chubb and nephew Clancy "Doc" Tedder. He is also survived by his sisters Carroll Chubb (Tom Langer), Nancy Chubb, and Constance Chubb (Andy Squires) and their children, and loving groups of extended family and friends.

He and Debbie met on July 4, 1982. The fireworks continued and they married in 1987. He was the quintessential family man who loved his wife and kids beyond measure.

Spence attended Yorktown High School and Landon School. He graduated from University of North Carolina with a double major in Math and English, and earned his law degree from the University of Virginia Law School.

He spent his first two years practicing law in Los Angeles. In 1982 he moved back to Virginia where he worked in a law firm until he joined the International Trade Commission, Office of Unfair Import Investigations. In 2014 he started his solo practice in intellectual property law.

Spence loved the Chicago White Sox and UNC basketball. Along with this law school friend, Brad Suter, he started the intermural soccer league at UVA. He went on to enthusiastically coach the youth soccer teams of his kids. He, with friends from his ITC office, started a volleyball team that expanded to many friends and it continues today.

Spence was fascinated by astronomy, geology, paleontology and all sciences. His knowledge of World War II history was so impressive that our Normandy guide stayed with us two hours longer than planned. He was the orchestrator of family communication and curator for family trips, which often involved going to see a spectacular natural event.

Fondly remembered by his family for his good cheer, his email and text chains, his Youtube rock and roll playlists, and his unique sense of humor.

A celebration of his life will be held on July 29, 2023 at 2 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington, 4444 Arlington Blvd, Arlington, VA 22204, with a reception immediately following the service. Interment will follow at a later date at Penn Forest Natural Burial Park in Pittsburgh. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Homeward Trails Animal Rescue, Planned Parenthood, or the charity of your choice.

I only learned a few months ago about Spence's passing. We were friends in law school and shared a love for ACC basketball (UNC for Spence, UVA for me). I recall attending the ACC tournament at Capital Center with Spence. He was a great guy, and I have always been sorry that we lost touch over the years. My sincere condolences to his family for this loss.

I worked at the ITC with Spence for many years. Spence was always ready with a smile and a greeting...so warm and kind. He will be missed.

Sincere condolences to Spence's family from an early high school friend of his. I don't have any specific memory to share except that he was such a nice and sweet person, and was liked by everybody who knew him. Wish I'd known he went to UNC Chapel Hill, as I attended college not 30 minutes from there! But we'd lost touch by then. I know he'll be dearly missed.
