THADDEUS MUMFORD Obituary

Thaddeus Quentin Mumford
Died peacefully at home on August 3, 2018, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born February 14, 1923, in Rockingham, NC to Thomas A. Mumford and Ruth Woodard Mumford. He graduated from Shaw University in Raleigh, NC, and attended Howard University School of Dentistry in Washington, DC, graduating in 1947. Following a year and a half at the Guggenheim Clinic for Children in New York City, Dr. Mumford volunteered to serve in the United States Army as a dentist and was assigned to the hospital at Fort George Meade, MD. He opened his general dentistry office in northeast Washington, DC in 1950 and practiced in this location for 60 years before retiring in 2009. Dr. Mumford married Sylvia Jefferson in 1948 and from this union produced two sons (they divorced in 1976). In 1978 he married Gloria Cooper and was joined by her two children. Dr. Mumford is survived by his wife Gloria Mumford, four children, Thad Mumford, Jr., Jefferey Mumford (Donna), Donnell Cooper (Karen B.), and Karen Cooper, one granddaughter Blythe Mumford and one grandson Christopher Cooper and a host of family and friends. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 18, 11 a.m., Northeastern Presbyterian Church, 2112 Varnum St. NE, Washington, DC 20018. Family visitation is from 10 to 11 a.m.

Dr. Mumford was my childhood dentist and extremely influential in establishing the understanding for performing good oral healthcare and dental hygiene. He made going for dental visits an exciting hallmark. His true gift seemed quite like that of an older brother. Rest in peace.

I knew Thad Mumford and his brother Jeff as young people growing up on 17th Street in DC. That block turned out to be the home of many super talented people. Thad was among them.
He wanted to be remembered for the quality of his work, and he will be. Rest well Thad.

I was fortunate enough to know Thad and Gloria through our water exercise classes over many years.Thad was always so kind and caring.He and Gloria added so much joy to our classes. I will always be grateful to have had the privilege of knowing Thad and send my love and deep caring to Gloria, the Mumford family and everyone else touched by this wonderful man.
