Carolyn,
My Mom mentioned you called, and we just received your letter with the sad news of Ted's passing. My Dad was so fond and such an admirer of his cousin, Ted. Remember the Lockhart Racing sticker he put on the window of the bridge? Such a great sense of humor! I remember hearing how loved and respected he was by his crews. Such a great loss, please accept our deepest condolences.

Carolyn,
I just did not know, and I am very sorry for your (and our) loss.
It was a long time from the days on the "Leaky Weeks" to my visit with you and Ted in York. It did not take me more than a minute to be back in tune together in spite of the lack of contact. Our first trip to Rome was memorable for all the right reasons - good companionship.
I am deeply saddened.

I had the honor of serving as Adminral Locakhart's Public Affairs Officer when he served as Commander, U.S. Naval Forces South Atlantic. It was an honor to work with him and for him during our cruises around South America and flights to West Africa.

He was loved by all and is dearly missed by those who had the chance to work with him and for him during his distinguished career.

There are so many of us that were fortunate enough to have the pleasure of serving under Admiral Lockhart during his command of the USS Valley Forge CG-50. He was a great leader and a man of inspiration. I know he made an impact on all of us who served with him on the Vally Forge.

Remember the good times and cherish the memories he brought to you and your family as we do as his shipmates. God Bless him in his new journey. Our thoughts are with you, and your family, may he rest in peace in the Heavens above.

I was fortunate to serve under Admiral Lockhart in USS Valley Forge (CG 50). In my 20 years of Navy service I was fortunate to work for many outstanding leaders, but I never worked for anyone finer than Admiral Lockhart. I am grateful to have continued to remain in touch with him through the years after I departed Valley Forge. He was a constant source of great counsel and encouragement.

I had the privilege of serving my first sea tour on the Paul F. Foster under then Captain Lockhart. He and Carolyn unknowingly served as role models for Jackie and I throughout my Navy career and particularly for my time in command. We (the wardroom) had an artist do a farewell portrait/collage of his time in Command with the main element showing him notinhis dress uniform, but in his working khaki's, smiling, with his hands clasped behind his head. We are both deeply saddened by his passing - the world needs more men like my former Captain, not less. His example lives on as a legacy in Naval Officers through folks like me and those I've had the joy to lead, even though he will no longer be physically with us. May you have fair winds and quartering seas ( following seas didn't work well on a Spruance Class), and only the fond memories of your time together. With love,

Nancy Rhodes

Sending lots of love from heavy hearts in Phoenix. Loved our visits to California and then NH. My favorite memory is Mr. Lockhart reading the Star Wars Encyclopedia to Jack on the front steps of the Maine cottage. He will be dearly missed.

Love, Nancy Jack & Leo

WIshing you fair winds and a following sea.

Dear Carolyn,
Ted was such a very decent and good man. He served his country honorably. Ted and I maintained contact via emails. We both enjoyed the same humor and political feelings. I was his fraternity brother at Colby. I share your loss. I felt honored just to know him.

My condolences to the Lockhart family. I am the same age as Admiral Lockhart and also served on the USS John Paul Jones. I also attended the 1950 Jamboree of the Boy Scouts of America and it was for me as well a life changing experience. He was a wonderful man and a credit to his family and his nation.

The Navy, and especially the Surface Warfare Community, has lost one of its true legends. He will be sorely missed. Our condolences to the entire Lockhart family.

July 28, 2013

Carolyn,

No words can convey our sorrow. Ted was the best pure leader I ever met, but vastly and more importantly, he was an incredibly good person. I learned so much during our nearly four years together and will never forget him. The two of you were the ideal and indeed perfect Navy couple; Laura and I learned so much from being around both of you.

We are just moving to Boston and look forward to coming up and seeing you soon. Let us know if there is anything we can do during the days ahead.

Ted was an American original, and we loved him.

Much love to you, Jeff, Anne, and the whole family

Your friends always,

Jim and Laura
