Ted was a first class person with a big heart and a great sense of humor. He cared about people and was like family to my parents. We need more people like Ted Nickens in this world. He made it a better place. We will miss him but never forget him.

I met Ted through my father. Together they coached my little league basketball team when I was in elementary school. I have many fond memories (as well as some Jerry Garcia ties that I still wear) and my family will miss him dearly.

Coach Nickens added a touch of class to the struggling Varisty Football Team at Blake High School in Silver Spring, MD. My son, Parker Steveson, played on that team and was always inspired by his uplifting words of encouragement. Coach Nickens always seemed to know when the kids needed his kindness the most. I was fortunate to have a close relationship with the team (I fed them before every Friday night game) and got to know Coach Nickens as a gentleman of compassion and intelligence. His Jerry Garcia ties always made us smile, and his love for his family was always obvious.
My best to his family, and especially to his little son who used to run up and down the sidelines with me when I took photos of the game.

I knew Ted at the U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division where I worked for nearly 35 years. Ted was one of the great people who worked at the Civil Rights Division. He was an upbeat realist, which is not easy, especially under trying conditions. Knowing him was a privilege.

I will miss Ted. I was getting to know him through school. We would have great talks about race relations in school and the country. We saw things improving but we both agreed there was more work to do. His influence at John A. Holmes will be missed. I keep him in my thoughts often.

I coached with Coach Nickens the last 5 years and enjoyed every minute of it. He taught excellence and discipline in every athlete he touched. He loved every athlete he worked with and wanted the best for them. We are going to miss Coach Nickens in so many ways but mostly as the great friend he was to us. I would like to thank the family for sharing him with us and for giving us some great memories.

Mr. Nickens and I shared a room during the first semester of the 2007-2008 school year. We talked a lot about our children, sports, our faith, and just life in general. He touched a lot of lives, adults and students. We will miss him tremendously. Things will not be the same without him.

I have know Ted for 34 years. Ted and I entered the doors of the Department of Justice on the very same day. I am saddened about his death but I have joy in my heart because I know Ted found and knew his Lord and Savior. Ted was very special, full of life, and dedicated to his family. We had one great thing in common, we both loved our mothers and could not do enough for them. Ted was also a proud and loving father and husband. May God shine his light of peace, love and Joy over the family during this time and always. I will truly miss him and his passing is an example to all of us to NOW live life and "to expect great things" because Ted lived his life with great expectations. God Bless you Camille and the entire Nickens' family.

Ted was a great person to work with. I always enjoyed hearing his life stories and laughed with him often. I am really going to miss him.
I had such respect for the work he did with our young people at Holmes. Through things like the Gentlemen of Distinction, Dress for Success, and dedicated coaching, Ted was an amazing role model. He wanted our young people to always hold their heads up high and be "ladies" and "gentlemen." I really respected that, and I know our students did as well.

When I told my daughters that Mr. Nickens passed away, they were so shocked to hear it! Now they are sad. They loved him as a teacher and as a parent I was glad to know that he was their teacher! But know that as long as you have his memories he will always live within your hearts! Mr. Nickens will never be forgotten! I will remember him as a teacher of encoragement, one who cared about his students!
I will keep the family in my thoughts and prayers as well as every child who knew him dealing with this loss! God Bless You!

Coach Nickens will be missed by all here at JAH. He was a mentor, a leader, a teacher, a coach and a friend. He was a wise man who understood many things with a clarity that I only hope one day to obtain. My prayers are with his family, friends, and students at this difficult time.

I was very sorry to hear about Ted's death. I worked with Ted as Secretary and Staff Assistant for many many years. He was always very kind and respectful to me as well as my son Wilson. Him and I both had numerous discussions about our kids, as well as many office functions together. Ted was such a comfort to me at the time of my moms death and showed nothing but compassion. You couldn't help but like the man because he got along with everyone and it showed. I will remember him always and keep his family in prayer.

I worked with Ted during the 1980's at the Department of Justice. On occasion, I remember Ted bringing his family to the office. He was so proud and so very close to his family. I'm especially thinking of the family today in your time of sorrow and hope that you will find comfort in your memories and peace in your faith. It was really nice knowing and working with Ted.

I am so sorry about the death of such a loving husband and father. I wish I could find words that would relieve your pain, but I cannot imagine what they are. Losing a husband and father is one of the saddest life experiences possible, and words of true comfort are difficult to find.
Although I never met Ted, I work with some of the finest people at the Department of Justice who deeply admired and respected him.
I know he shall be truly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.
God Bless,
