BARTMAN THOMAS ROBERT BARTMAN Thomas Robert Bartman, 59, died on May 13, 2013 due to complications from ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). He is survived by his wife, Caroline Dixon Bartman "Nenie"; and daughters, Caroline Ruth Wyche Bartman and Jane Watkins Dixon Bartman of Washington, DC. He is also survived by his mother, Pauline Ruth Eidt Bartman; sister, Elizabeth Bartman Smith; brother-in-law, John D. Smith; and niece and nephews of McLean, VA; and brother-in-law, Joe Dixon, Jr. of Columbia, SC. He was predeceased by his father, Robert Bartman. Tom was born in Frankfurt, Germany, and spent most of his childhood years in Frankfurt and Munich, developing a lifelong interest in German language and culture. He graduated with honors from Haverford College in Pennsylvania, received a Masters of Philosophy from Yale University in German Literature and a J.D. from the University of Virginia. Following law school, he clerked for the Honorable D. Dortch Warriner in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. Tom practiced law in the fields of environmental and Native American law with various DC law firms, the Department of Justice, and most recently the Solicitor's Office of the Department of the Interior. An active member of the National Presbyterian Church, where he served as deacon, elder, and Stephen Minister, he was especially proud of his participation in the National Presbyterian Church choir, which complemented his love of classical music. For the past few years, including December 2012, he participated in the NPC Festival Choir's performance of the Messiah. Tom's life was exemplified by his willingness to serve, whether it was writing the deacon's newsletter for his parish, donating blood and platelets to the Red Cross or helping his daughters create Halloween costumes. He also approached life with a deep intellectual curiosity. He researched the best ways of staying fit and ran most recently in the 20ll Bethesda-Chevy Chase Turkey Chase 10K with his daughters. Traveling was another passion of his, with trips to Europe, China and India as well as a memorable rafting trip down the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon with South Carolina friends. The family wishes to thank Narine, Laura and Julie as well as staff members at The Washington Home for their supportive caregiving. The family is also grateful to the staff at Iona Senior Services' Wellness & Arts Center for the many hours Tom spent in their exceptional program.
