Thomas Lopp Obituary

THOMAS GILBERT LOPP
Thomas Gilbert Lopp, born on June 4, 1926 in Seattle, WA to Dwight and Alice Lopp, passed away on July 12, 2011 in Washington, DC at the age of 85. He was the eldest of five children. After he graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Guam/Saipan theater. During Tom's early years, his summers included frequent fishing and clamming adventures near Rolling Bay on Bainbridge Island and overnight hikes in the Cascades with his twin brothers. After WWII Tom enjoyed spending time at his property on Shaw and traveled extensively, including several visits to the Eskimo village of Wales, Alaska, where his father was born and raised. Tom earned a BS Degree in Fisheries Science from the University of Washington. He subsequently moved to Washington, DC, where he worked for the U.S. Tariff Commission until his retirement in 1981. Tom is survived by brothers, Don (Joan) and Ron (Elaine); sister, Ann (Dick) Stemwell; and five nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sister, Kathleen (Verbeck) Smith. There will be a family celebration of Tom's life at a later date.

Kaitlin & Caren Kronquist, cousins-in-law of Tom's knew him primarily through the wonderful postcards he sent us from all of his travels. He was so gracious to always let us know what he was up to. We enjoyed the wonderful photos and amazing stamps from his travels. His aunt Mary (Lopp) Kronquist had a stamp collection, and I knew she would have loved all the postcards too. Though we only met him in person a few time; we felt we knew him well from our correspondence, him to us and us to him when we traveled. I always wanted to be as adventurous as Tom when I am able, he was truly an inspiration.
