VADA BUTCHER Obituary
VADA E. BUTCHER
Dr. Vada Easter Butcher of Washington, DC died on Thursday, April 28, 2016 in Bowie, MD at age 93. She joined the music faculty at Howard University (1946 - 1976), where she was a pianist, musicologist, ethnomusicologist, Dean, (1972 - 1976) of the College of Fine Arts. She was married to the late James "Beanie" W. Butcher, Jr. (1909 - 1994), Howard Drama Professor. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 12 at 10:30 a.m. followed by service at 11 a.m. at The Church of the Holy Comforter, 701 Oglethorpe St., NW. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Church of the Holy Comforter. Services by McGUIRE.www.mcguire-services.com

Dr. Butcher was in a class of her own. I will always remember my undergraduate days in her Music History class at Howard. She granted my permission to use her 1970 research of Ethnomusicology supported by Dept. Of H.E.W. for our National Gospel Convention Institute to enhance our curricula studies. My sincere condolences.

Dr. Butcher initially engaged the legendary Donald Byrd to establish a Jazz Institute at Howard University and in 1975 she appointed me to design and administer degree programs in jazz studies. Her unwavering support and encouragement were crucial to the early development and the evolution of jazz education at Howard University. Rest in eternal peace Dr. Butcher.
