Died May 28, 2005 at her hoome in Palatka, FL, after a courageous battle with cancer. She moved to Palatka in 1997. Dr. Bowen-Hugh was born in Clendenin, WV, the daughter of James Gilbert and Lula Chandler Bowen. After graduating from the Clendenin High School and the Charleston Business College in Charleston, WV, she worked several years for the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation for the State of West Virginia, and later for the General Motors Corporation. She then returned to school and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the George Washington University, then entered the George Washington School of Medicine, getting her Doctor of Medicine degree in 1961. She finished her training in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1965. Dr. Bowen-Hugh was in private practice in Washington, D.C. for more than 30 years. For health reasons, she retired in 1997, moving to Palatka, FL.
Survivors include two sisters, Madge Bowen Matheny (her husband, Jack M. Matheny) of Clendenin, WV and Marie Bowen Canterbury of Arlington, VA; one nephew, Dr. Jack M. Matheny II (his wife, Jill, and three sons, Sean, Adam and Brent) of Palatka, WV; three nieces, Jane Canterbury Hjelm (her husband, Dr. James W. Hjelm of Fairfax, VA, and their two children, Kevin Hjelm and Kristin Hjelm Cooper and her husband, Gregory Cooper), June Canterbury Lo Monaco (her husband, Paul Lo Monaco and their two sons, James and Timothy) of Arlington, VA and Keith Ann Matheny Smith (her husband, Craig Smith and their two sons, Samuel and Benjamin) of Clendenin. Also survived by a host of friends and colleagues.
At a young age, Violet became a member of the First Baptist Church of Clendenin. Later she was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. and then the McLean Baptist Church in McLean, Va.
Dr. Bowen-Hugh's family will receive friends at the Maddox Funeral Home in Clendenin, WV, from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2005 prior to graveside services at 11 a.m. in the Koontz Cemetery in Clendenin. Pastor Rex Thompson of the Clendenin First Baptist Church will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Putman County Chapter, Palatka, FL or to a charity of your choice.

She was my OB GYN from 1968 - 1971 She delivered Dec 1st 1970 my son 10 lbs..
