VIRGINIA McCAFFREY Obituary

Virginia Mary McCaffrey, M.D.
Virginia (Vee) Mary McCaffrey passed away on September 1, 2021 in Costa Rica where she had lived with her husband Bob Wagner since 2017. She was only 59 years old. She dedicated her life and career to protecting the most vulnerable. A champion of the underserved, especially children and young women, she was always giving of her time, money and spirit. A lover of people and animals, she leaves behind a slew of friends, family and acquaintance whose lives were better for having been in her orbit.

Virginia grew up in a large Irish family in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, NY. Inspired by her older sister Margaret, a neurologist, Virginia decided to enter the medical field. She attended New York Medical College and then did her residency at the George Washington Hospital. She practiced as a board certified anesthesiologist in Northern Virginia for more than 20 years.

An actor, competitive swimmer and gymnast in high school, Virginia continued to pursue her many passions and talents throughout her life, including painting, ballet and martial arts. In her early 50s, she became an instrument rated pilot.

After moving to Costa Rica, Vee and Bob traveled the world and volunteered extensively with local wildlife organizations. But more than that, she continued to help those in need, whether challenged with health issues or financial insecurity.

Described by her childhood friends as funny, outgoing, adventurous, independent, assertive, brave, street smart, big hearted and loving, she remained true to these qualities throughout her life, Deeply loved by those who knew her, her passing leaves a giant hole in many hearts and lives.

She was a devoted wife to her husband, Bob and a loving and dedicated mother to her two children, Aidan and Deirdre. She is also survived by three sisters, three brothers, many cousins, nieces, and nephews, as well as countless friends and grateful patients.

No service is planned. Donations in her memory can be made to the Virginia McCaffrey Fund for Children at www.doorwaysva.org/virginia-mccaffrey-fund.
