VIRGINIA McCORMICK Obituary

VIRGINIA SERVICE McCORMICK
Passed away on Friday, August 24, 2012 at her home in Chevy Chase. The daughter of a Foreign Service officer, Virginia "Ginny" was born in Kunming, China in 1935. During her youth she also lived in New Zealand and India. She majored in history at Oberlin College ('57) and married Garth McCormick in 1960 in Liverpool, England. He predeceased her by four years to the day. For over 45 years Virginia was a member of the River Road Unitarian Universalist Congregation where she volunteered and taught Sunday school. She also worked as a secretary, a school aide, and a literacy volunteer. She indulged her love of art and helping people by volunteering at the National Gallery of Art for many years. A gifted poet, she published a collection of her poems as "Some Days are Orange Days" in 1989. She also enjoyed reading, bridge, gardening, swimming, and tennis. She is survived by four children, Jessica McCormick of Chevy Chase, Rachel McCormick of Falls Church, Caroline Razzaq of Gaithersburg, John McCormick of Bethesda; three grandchildren, Dylan, Brian, and Grace Beebe; and two brothers, Robert and Philip Service. Virginia was a kind and open person and a devoted wife and mother. A memorial service will be held for her on Saturday, September 29 at 11 a.m. at the River Road Unitarian Universalist Congregation (RRUUC), 6301 River Road, Bethesda, MD 20817. Memorial gifts may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the RRUUC.

Dear Bob and Ginny's family, It greatly saddened me to hear of Ginny's passing. I was at Woodstock School class of '51, one class above her and she was always such a warm, gracious person with a smile that sparkled. I shall try to find her book of poetry and look forward to reading it. Many happy memories surround Ginny and I send sincere sympathies to the family.
