Walter Paul Haass
Walter Paul Haass, age 91, of Silver Spring, MD, passed away Wednesday, November 23, 2022. He was a co-valedictorian graduate of Closter High School in 1948, received a degree in mechanical engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, NJ, in 1951, and later earned an equivalent of a master's degree in nuclear engineering through a program sponsored by MIT. Walter initially worked as an engineer for Westinghouse Electric in Pittsburgh. Then, he worked at the Martin Company in Baltimore, MD to develop portable nuclear power plants for military use in remote locations. Finally, before retiring in 1999, he moved his family to Potomac, MD and worked in Rockville/Bethesda for over 30 years for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, formerly the Atomic Energy Commission, to ensure the safe design and operation of commercial nuclear power plants.
Walter was a family man and spent much of his time with family in New Jersey, Ocean City, MD, at Redskins' games, and supporting his children and grandchildren at birthday and holiday celebrations and attending their sports and school events.
Walter was an avid tennis player, golfer, and bridge player. Recently, his favorite activity was playing bridge weekly online with his grandchildren. He was an active member of Faith United Methodist Church. He enjoyed traveling with family over a 6-week period in a motorhome across the United States to California and to 13 European countries over a 3-week period. He visited global destinations, including Israel, Germany, Australia, and China. He enjoyed wintering among family and friends in Naples and Venice, FL.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Louise Haass of Closter, NJ; a sister Jean and husband Clint; and a brother, Kenneth; but is survived by a sister Marie and husband Michael. Walter is also survived by his childhood sweetheart and wife of 67 years, Beverly Arlene Hoffman Haass; his three children, Lyn, Tami and husband David, Scott and wife Sandy; eight grandchildren (Andrew and wife Kathryn, Timothy and wife Evelyn, Kevin, Katie and fiancé Ryan, Allison and boyfriend Jackson, Victoria, Ian, and Thomas); and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, December 2, 2022 at the Robert A. Pumphrey Funeral Home, 300 West Montgomery Ave., Rockville, MD. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m, Saturday, December 3, 2022 at Faith United Methodist Church, 6810 Montrose Road, Rockville, MD with Rev. Dr. Laura Norvell officiating, followed by burial at Norbeck Memorial Park, Montgomery Cemetery, 16225 Batchellors Forest Drive, Olney, MD. Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of his life following the burial at Manor Country Club. In lieu of flowers, friends may make memorial contributions to the
