WARREN EISENBERG Obituary

EISENBERG Warren Wolff Eisenberg Died peacefully Sunday, May 13, 2018 surrounded by loved ones. Born December, 22 1932, Warren grew up and in Cranford, NJ. He graduated with honors from George Washington University (class of '54) where he sat on the editorial board of The Hatchet. He worked as a writer for The Federal Reserve in New York, where he met his future wife, Rita Muir. In 1963, he became editor for the political weekly newspaper Philadelphia Guardian, and later became a journalist for Philadelphia Magazine. They moved to Chevy Chase, MD in 1966 where Warren soon became a Legislative Assistant to Congressman William Green of Philadelphia. In 1971, he became Administrative Assistant/Chief of Staff for freshman Congressman John Heinz III of Pittsburgh. Warren worked on key legislative efforts to end mandatory retirement, protect senior citizens, and further conservation efforts. He helped write legislation to preserve Tinicum National Environmental Center, (later the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge), the largest freshwater tidal marsh in Pennsylvania. In September 1977, Warren became Director of The International Council of B'nai Brith, where he was actively involved in humanitarian relief efforts, Soviet Jewry, the Mid-East peace process, and other relevant issues throughout Latin America, Europe and the United States. He spent considerable time reporting on economic and human rights issues in Latin America, and the re-emergence of political extremism and antisemitism in parts of Europe. Some of his most rewarding work was providing direct relief to communities in crisis. In the mid-1980s, he worked closely with the founders of American World Jewish Service to begin relief efforts in Mozambique and the Philippines, and he also helped lead an official humanitarian mission to Cuba. He met with rufuseniks in the former Soviet Union, families of The Disappeared In Argentina, and with US officials on behalf of families whose loved ones were victims of terrorism abroad. He retired from ICBB in 1996. A veracious reader of political biographies and world affairs, Warren loved to travel with family and was a frequent patron of music and theater. He is survived by Rita his loving wife of 57 years as well as his sons, Adam, Eric, and David, daughter-in law, Patricia and granddaughter, Gillian. He'll be remembered for his kindness, humor, stories and love of history. Donations may be made in his memory to Ninevah Foundation, a wilderness organization dedicated to conservation in central Vermont. Rita, Adam, Eric, David, I know I haven't been on the scene for a while but Warren meant a lot to me, both career-wise as I was just getting going, and more importantly, personally. This sad news is difficult to absorb, especially when thinking of such an energetic and fun guy, a lover of life and an accomplisher. Sending my long-distance condolences to all of you, with gratitude for the years spent with him on a daily basis, and the opportunity to meet and spend time with all of you.
