William Jarboe Obituary

JARBOE WILLIAM M. JARBOE "John" On Monday May 4, 2009, John, surrounded by his loving wife and family, passed away in his home in Montgomery County. John is survived by his wife of 66 years, Kathleen McDermott, his seven children John & Fran Jarboe, Kathleen & fiancé Joe Schilling, Robert Jarboe, Stephen & Jackie Jarboe, Nancy & Dr. James Harold, Linda & Kevin Soles, Loretta & Ted Eby; his twelve grandchildren Christopher, Nathanael, Mellissa, Sarah, Rachael, Michael, Ben, Emily, Margaret, Alex, John and Tim and great grandchild Dezmond. William, known by all as "John", a 3rd generation Washingtonian, was the classic small business owner in the printing industry who achieved the American Dream. John generously shared his profits and success with family, employees, friends and the community. His passion for printing officially began at Jefferson Jr. High School and blossomed at McKinley Tech High School. In 1937, with assistance from his teacher Mr. Edwards who loaned him $50, John bought his first printing press. A notable early government contract involved the first printing of draft cards for World War II. His business - Jarboe Printing Company, located at 15 Oglethorpe Street, NW, DC - grew rapidly over a 75 year period, employing more than 50 individuals at one time. His awards through the years included Master Printers of the Printing Industry of Metropolitan Washington (PIMW), Distinguished Service Award of PIMW, and numerous community service awards from such organizations as The Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind, Southwest Lions Club, Heroes (for Fallen Policemen and Firefighters) and Jarfowkin Society. He was a supporter of the Arts and a Board member at Ford''s Theatre. He especially enjoyed contributing to DC High School marching bands, St. Dominic Church in SW DC, Sibley Hospital and Our Lady of Visitation Catholic Church He was also instrumental in starting a scholarship fund for students interested in printing at Montgomery College and donated state of the art printing machinery to the program at the Rockville Campus. John was an extraordinarily generous individual, providing funds and resources for many individuals to start small businesses and for friends and others to meet various financial crises. It was not uncommon for him to read a news article or see a TV feature focusing on someone in need and readily responded by providing some financial assistance. John was also a talented musician who played the drums in high school and continued to play professionally, at night, while he built his printing business. His love of music and dancing was evident at the many parties and events he organized for family, friends and business associates. John''s core of existence was his devotion to his wife and family. As the patriarch he exemplified high moral standards and provided a nurturing environment with an emphasis on love and caring for one another. He was a visionary with a zest for life. Kathleen and he welcomed everyone into their home. John was the " exception to the rule "- he was unique and "one of a kind.'' He loved what he did, his family, and his friends. He has kept us all in his heart and he will surely be kept in all of ours - always. There will be a memorial celebration for John''s life at twelve noon on May 16 at Our Lady of Visitation Catholic Church, 14135 Seneca Road, Darnestown, Maryland 20877. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sibley Memorial Hospital, 5255 Loughboro Road, NW, Washington, DC 20016 and Our Lady of Visitation Catholic Church,14135 Seneca Road, Darnestown, Maryland 20877.
