WILLIAM MILLS Obituary


WILLIAM MILLS  
On December 22, 2016 William A Mills, a radiation safety physicist, passed away in Sandy Spring, MD at the age of 87. A Remembrance will be held at the Sandy Spring Museum, 17901 Bentley Rd, on Jan 7, 2017 at 1 p.m. Dr. Mills held senior positions at the Public Health Service, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Born Oct 12, 1929 to Len and Mary Mills, he married Patricia Brown in 1952. In the 1950s, Dr. Mills researched neutron dosimetry at Oak Ridge & Los Alamos National Labs. In 1963, Billy moved to Rockville to lead the Bio Physics Unit of the Radiological Health Lab. In 1970, he directed Criteria & Standards at EPA's Office of Radiation Programs. In 1981, he became Chief of NRC's Health Effects Branch. Dr. Mills was a founding member of the Health Physics Society, serving as 1995-1996 President. Billy loved to garden and visit the beach with the families of his sisters, Fay and Joan.  He is survived by his wife, Pat; as well as four children, Andy, Cindy, Len and Dan. Also survived by his sister, Joan Alcorn; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren

Hello Pat and family: I knew Billy most of his years in PHS and EPA and treasure the association friendship. He allowed me to be his deputy many of those years and he looked after me many times and junctures. I often think of him and will continue to do so until my time comes. Loved the guy!!
