Bernard Smith Obituary

Rear Admiral Bernard J Smith, USN (Ret.) passed away peacefully on November 1st, 2024, in Alexandria, Virginia. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Patricia Tate Smith, and cherished the blessing of their children, Theresa Cardillo (Tom), Adam Smith (Erin), and Cara Martinson (Randy) and grandchildren, Rhyan, Levi and Lincoln. Born on November 21, 1940, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and later moved to West Palm Beach Florida, he was a loving brother to sister Joanne Haefeli (Paul) and brother Roger Smith (predeceased). He honorably served in the United State Navy for over 40 years, retiring in July 2000. He will be remembered by his family, church family and community as a humble, inspiring and Godly man who was truly connected with his faith and family. After retirement from the Navy, Bernie continued his passion for service as an active member of Plymouth Haven Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia. Visitation is at Demaine Funeral Home, 520 S. Washington Street, Alexandria, Virginia 22314 on December 12th , 2024, from 4:00 pm -7:00 pm with funeral service to follow on Saturday December 14th at Plymouth Haven Baptist Church, 8600 Plymouth Road, Alexandria, Virginia 22308 at 10:00 am with a reception to follow. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a future date. Donations can be made in Bernie's name to, the Boys Town of America, Navy Marine Corp Relief Society, Plymouth Haven Baptist Church or Tunnel to Towers. So sorry for your loss. I was his meteorologist on the USS MIDWAY and we had a lot of fun going back and forth on my forecasts. He was a great Captain, leader and man. The world will miss him.
