Mark Watson Obituary

With sadness we announce the passing of Mark Herbert Watson. In his younger years Mark was a proud and talented mason, building strong and beautiful things out of brick and stone. Later he became a kitchen designer, and designed many gorgeous and functional kitchens. Throughout his life he was an artist, continually creating unique paintings with widely varied subjects and styles. He was an excellent cook, and liked making meals for friends and family, especially if it was something they had never tried before. He was a creative, thoughtful, hard working person who found satisfaction in creating things for others to enjoy. He was adventurous, with a passion for the outdoors. He especially loved the beach, with a lifelong affinity for Assateague Island. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and was still bringing home trout and catfish from the Potomac river during the last year of his life. He adored his Jack Russel Terrier Colonel Sanders, an enthusiastic partner in all outdoor adventures. One of his greatest daily joys was going on long walks with the Colonel in the woods. Mark was a beautifully kind person, who was intensely devoted to his family and small circle of closest friends. He is survived by his two sons Clinton and Matthew, his best friend Nancy, his sister Stacy (Rick), his nephews Nick, Jacob, and Zachary, and his niece Kaitlin. As well as numerous other friends and family. All of whom love him, and will miss him very much. An informal open house gathering will be held on Sunday June 29 at 3505 Fullerton Street Beltsville, MD. 3-6pm. Any and all are welcome.

We live across the street from Mark's house and next door to the house once owned by his brother Joe and his mother Marcella. We did not know Mark well but he was very kind to us, baking Christmas cookies and delivering some to us for many years.

I met Mark through my dear friend Nancy, about 15 (?) years ago. Mark's love of cooking food (homemade pizzas!), being around animals (specifically Whiskey and The Colonel), and enjoying nature would always be a part of our few, but memorable, conversations.
I would look forward to Nancy sharing their adventures on Assateag every June and September.
Thank you Nancy, knowing Mark was a pleasure and a joy. He will truly be missed, and loved by those who knew him.

I only knew Mark a short time I met him two and a half or three years ago at the dog park, but we had many long conversations that made me feel like I had known him for years. He will be missed.

Mark was the best friend and a wonderful person. He was beloved. He taught me to cook(at least improve my cooking!). He was also a fantastic painter and artist and banjo player! I will always miss him. We shared many dog walks over the years with Whiskey and Colonel.

This one hits hard. We were such good buddies so many years ago. Billy, Kenny, Mark, Val and myself were inseparable in those crazy 70's. I know my wife Alison met him years later, because he came up to Sykesville and helped me rebuild a chimney in the 90´s, he was at our wedding in ´92, and I know stopped by his house when I bought my Porsche because it had to be inspected right near his house in Silver Spring...that was bad timing on my part. Though I was the last one to get married, children took over all of our lives and hadn´t seen Mark since. I know we invited him to my 50th birthday party, and was very sorry he couldn't come.... that was 20 years ago as of yesterday.... So many memories going to the mountains at Savage River, many geological adventures, concerts, Little Feat!, fishing, painting the Mormon temple & (sword swallower), making home movies ("The Mole's Big Plan"), or just hanging out drinking and smoking at the Park. He was a gentle giant of so many talents. RIP Mark love Ralph

While the fish in the rivers on Earth will now get a breather, the ones in Heaven are now on edge.
We spent so much time together in our 20s & 30s with a wonderful close-knit band of friends, but families & distance steered us in different directions. Rest in the arms of the Lord, dear friend. I will look for you on the other side
