Gerald VanSlate Obituary

Van Slate, Gerald

Gerald Stanley "BIG JER" Van Slate passed away at home July 10th, 2013 with his wife, daughter and sister at his side.

Jerry was born April 26, 1939 to the late Stanley and Gertrude Van Slate. He married Barbara (Sauter) Van Slate on December 14, 1973, and was looking forward to their 40th wedding anniversary this December.

He is survived by his sister, Marlene Henrichs, Merrill, WI; son, Jay, LaCrosse, WI; and daughter, Sharon "Shari" Van Slate, Tampa, FL; granddaughters, Catherine and Calli Van Slate, Merrill, WI; and great granddaughter, Angel, Wausau, WI; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his two sons, James "Crinky" and Jesse "Big Kal" VanSlate; his brothers, Dennis "Dede" and Jeffrey "Skins" Van Slate.

Jerry was an avid sports fan and enjoyed his Packer rec-room never missing a Packer or Brewer game. He loved sitting on the patio, radio blaring, watching the birds and looking at the beautiful gardens Barbara planted for him. Jerry spent 42 years as a welder building bridges at Hartwig Mfg. (now PDM) where he acquired many good and loyal friends who through the years continued their friendship bs-ing and playing poker. He was known for his open door policy, (everyone is welcome) and always offered everyone a cold Point! Many late nights going to bed and saying "ok you guys, turn off the lights and lock the door on your way out"!

He will be deeply and sadly missed by his family and many, many friends.

Memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, July 14, 2013 at the Brainard Funeral Home, 522 Adams St., Wausau. Followed by a Celebration of Life at the Legacy Bar & Grill, 4202 County Rd. WW (corner of WW and K), Wausau. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. until the time of the service. Please bring a memory or story to share in celebration of Jerry's life.

Barb & Family
Our heart felt condolences to you and your family. Jerry was our neighbor since moving in on the North side in 1956. My mom Delores Roberts was great friends with the Van Slate's. May Jerry rest in peace.
