Darren Matthias Obituary
He was born on April 16, 1970, in Waverly, Iowa, to Galen and Betty (Petersen) Matthias. Darren grew up on a farm and graduated from Plainfield High School in 1988. He worked in Fredericksburg at ConAgra until he moved to Florida in the late1990s. While in Florida he worked at Evergreen Tree Service in Pinellas County. Over the years he did tree work, landscaping, and equipment restoration, service and repair. He cherished the many people in Florida he connected with.
Darren moved back to Shell Rock, Iowa, in May of 2024. He was employed by Waverly Walmart in the Auto Care Center. He enjoyed his work there and the people. Darren shared his day with his mom, a daily ritual that reflected his big heart and the closeness of their relationship. He was happy to reconnect with friends and family in Iowa. Uncle D loved his nieces and would tease them to see them laugh and smile.
Known for his warm spirit and deep kindness, Darren was the kind of person who put others before himself. "D" treasured a night out with friends and loved to share stories, laughter, and good times. He had a natural talent for tinkering and figuring things out and was always happy to help. He spent a lot of free time working in his garden and had a soft spot for animals of all kinds. Darren was an excellent cook. He loved using his smoker and his lasagna became legendary.
Darren is survived by his loving parents, Galen and Betty Matthias, three sisters, Dawn Posekany (Rob), Sherry Matthias, and Shelly Matthias, his adoring nieces Jaelyn, Abigail, Addison, Danica, Landrie, Aria, and Coralie, and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Darren was preceded in death by his grandparents Alvin and Irene (Bahe) Matthias of Readlyn and Ralph and Alma (Poppe) Petersen of Waverly, Iowa.
Darren lived life with generosity, warmth, and to have fun. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him. Family and friends are invited to a celebration of his life held on Sunday, July 13, 2025, from 1-5 p.m. at the Waverly Area Veterans Post at 1300 Fourth St. NE Waverly, Iowa.
