Erma Hilda (Baumgartner) Clausing was born on September 21, 1928, to Emil and Elizabeth (Beyerlein) Baumgartner in Clayton County, Iowa. She was baptized at St. Sebald Lutheran Church, Strawberry Point, Iowa, on October 14, 1928, and confirmed there on April 5, 1942.

She attended a rural school near her home through 8th grade and graduated from Strawberry Point High School in 1945, and attended Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa, graduating in 1946. They farmed nearby until 1953 when they moved to Bremer County and farmed near Waverly on the Clausing family farm. They moved to Waverly in 1968 where she worked as legal secretary and office manager for the law firm of Engelbrecht, Ackerman and Hassman until her retirement.

She enjoyed traveling and had been in 49 states, many Canada provinces, London GB, France, Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland. She loved to fish, and the family enjoyed many days fishing and especially their annual fishing trips to Minnesota. She loved to read, do needlework, and collecting cookbooks from their travels and trying new recipes from them.
